When traveling with cruise on I was hearing an occasional gentle chime that similarly puzzled me. In my own case, I realized that the chime was to notify me that lane centering was being turned off due to bad lane markings (snow, ice on road)

I’ll probably get beat up over this because it’s been posted about before but I can’t find it.
Every once and a while, I hear a pretty loud Ding, Ding sound coming from the speakers like the car’s alerting me to something but there is nothing on the screen or display so I have no idea what the alert is for. I know somebody on this forum knows. Please share!
I got a sound like that when I knocked my lights off the automatic setting. When I realized what it was and turned it to automatic it went away and hasn’t returned.

Lately, I have been getting the double "bong bong" audible alert a few seconds after I start the car. It seems to happen at least 50% of the time, with nothing on the screens that would indicate what it was for. I am in my garage most of the time, so I doubt it is warning me about traffic or having lost the lane markers... ?‍♂

It's not that it is all that annoying, but it certainly has me wondering what it might be... Sounds like it might be different than what you're experiencing, although the alert sound may be the same...
It could also be navigation suggestions from the nav. For some reason, a recent update turned on automatic navigation suggestions when you first start up. It's in the nav settings a few layers down. It's been mentioned here before, but I don't recall the exact terminology.

Thanks, I'll check it out!

When I am using Android Auto and I get a text message on my phone, I get a loud noise and a white circle appears that I can click on to hear my text message. Maybe not the same noise, but loud and annoying.
There are different dings for different things.

The most mysterious for me is notification in Android Auto (usually a text) because it happens after the phone makes an alert sound and often nothing shows up on my nav screen. You use car play so you won't have exactly that. But the sound is different.

I think the most likely is Lane markers. Sometimes when i am driving it finds them again so fast that the alert doesn't show up on screen but they play the entire sound because cutting off sounds is jarring? You might try turning off Lane keeping with the steering wheel button for a bit and see if you still get alerts?

Yeah, this is a different chime than the alarm that will beep up to 7 times (or whatever) if your seatbelt isn't fastened. The chime I am talking about is the different pitched "bong bong" that I think is maybe the same chime that you get in BC when it wants your hands back on the wheel... So it only makes the sound twice, in rapid succession, but there are no visible alerts on either screen. But thanks for the suggestion!
The sound I am talking about happens immediately after starting the car, it is like when you are on a plane they ask you to fasten your seat belts before taking off. The sound you are talking about happens after you start moving the car, at a speed like 15 mph or so. I have a habit of fastening my seat belt before starting the car, specifically so I won't hear that noise. That habit has worked well in the years I have been driving the car.

I have had that happen and I couldn’t figure out the source. For me, I think it was the fact that I was changing profiles after starting the car and starting to move out of the garage. If I change the profile while still in park, I don’t seem to have the noise.

You can disable pretty much all of it. Follow the above tips about the navigation (schools, traffic alerts, red light cameras etc all OFF) and see this thread.

I have disabled:
  • startup seatbelt reminder (the dings that play unless you click seatbelt before turning vehicle on)
  • passenger seatbelt dings
  • dings if you open door while vehicle is on
  • honk if you walk away with key (i.e. phone) while vehicle is on
  • all of the random navigation dings
  • backup beeping (needs a bypass device)
I hate dings.
