It's easy. Most people aren't bright enough to figure it out. It gets dirty from the airflow going over it and then bending back.

The following steps work well:

1) First, figure out where you are going.
2) Second, orient the rear two tires in the direction you are going, with the front tires aimed behind them.
3) Shift to D, say "HEY GOOGLE, CLEAN WINDOW", and then shift to R and drive.

Easy, peasy.

The key after washing the window is to completely dry it.
Any moisture on the glass will attract and retain more dust.

As Rick said, it's an aerodynamic issue (although not due to air direction). it is in large due to the low pressure created by the sun shade over the rear window. Dust particles will be pulled to the low pressure area and then be attracted to the area of lowest turbulence. Station wagons in the ’60s and ‘70s used air deflectors to scoop air toward the surface of the rear window, either attached to the D-pillars or the trailing edge of the roof. 🤔🐩

EDIT: Note tht adding air deflectors would increase aero drag. 😁🐩

So, you've tested driving 70mph in reverse and then measured (scientifically) the dirt on the window? I'll bet you haven't!!!!!

No, I just have an aerodynamics and fluid flow education. The phenomenon is similar to one that we find in an engine called "windage." That's one where the rotating mass creates a low pressure area immediately surrounding it, making all of the oil that is aerisolized want to stick to the rotating mass (which in turn creates massive drag on the rotating mass). This is countered in high-performance engines by the use of windage trays and crank scrapers. 🤔🐩

My Focus RS runs rich from the factory, so all my exhaust soot gets swept up into the rear window and hangs out there. I'm not sure if your Mach E is having the same situation pulling road dirt from behind and up into the window (my Mach E is spotless compared to my RS) but might be worth trying these or something similar in case it's vacuuming up road dirt.

It's a hatchback thing. The airflow creates a low-pressure zone behind the car that sucks up road grime. Nothing you can do to stop it completely. But a hydrophobic coating helps. Rain-X or a ceramic spray. Makes the dirt rinse off easier. And use your rear wiper. That's literally what it's for.

Rain x helps plus I removed the wiper with a 15 " which gives much larger cleaning area. This one works ( multiple threads on this )

Also applies to aircraft airfoil surfaces where the wings produce lift due to pressure differences above and below!

@Kamuelaflyer and I will attest to why heavy planes can fly without falling out of the sky !
