Wouldn’t it be nice if they had some sort of noise or alert to let you know they’re backing up? ?
Maybe they could just cut the muffler off. ?

No. Not more noise. I’m hard of hearing. Depending of the frequency, I either can’t hear it or my hearing aides make it so I can’t tell where it’s coming from. So the cacophony of a parking lot, with everyone backing out would be maddening.
What the government needs to mandate is bright flashing electroluminescent paint that strobes when you shift to reverse. That would be hard to miss.

You mean back up lights?

In a parking lot, it’s not like everyone is backing out at the same time.

For the issue you posted in the original post, have you tried backing into the garage so you don’t wake the kids up when you leave in the morning?

I would be surprised if it woke my kids up. Definitely quieter than my old v8 exhaust and they seem to sleep through everything. We also have white noise machines in their rooms so not much will wake them.

This is a great point.

As people lose their hearing, it becomes harder to differentiate between sounds and directions where sounds are coming from. If every car makes beeping sounds when backing up, it is true not every car in the parking lot will be backing up at the same time, but two or three at a time is normal. What a sound mess that will be.

No thanks. Noise pollution is real, and I don't like it.

Light pollution is real too, but we aren’t getting rid of headlights now are we?

Just how loud do you think the backup noises are?

With the windows up, I barely hear them. I think you’re using a bit of hyperbole.

Exactly. I don't see why a BEV needs to be louder than a ICE Honda Accord, but that is what the fake noises do.

Why do we even have mufflers on ICE cars anyway? Don't we want them as loud as possible so everyone knows we are coming? I don't. I like the quiet. Quiet is good, very good.
i am all for a minimum level of sound produced below 20mph and it apply no matter what the power source. Not just hybrids and EV that it applies to but ICE as well. If the ICE produce enough noise when running on their own I am cool with not needing an external sound source for them.
The times the lack of sound would get me was always in the sub 10 mph range of the cars and they almost always were hybrids. Parking lots and stop lights when it would happen. Not was the slow roll up and next to me no sound.

I can’t be the only one who’s almost stepped in front of a Tesla in the parking lot.

They either sneak up behind you when you’re walking or start pulling out of a parking space with no warning.

And no, I wasn’t on my cell phone. ?
For me it tends to be Prius that would pull it off as at that low of speed they tended to be EV mode only and made next to no noise.

@MachTee "...tampering with a mandated motor vehicle safety system."

Can you cite the mandate for a Sedan/SUV to have a back-up chime? I see the mandate for the lowspeed sound, but I don't see mandate for non construction equipment.

I'd rather hear the sound of reversing beeps rather than the farting noise some loud big bore exhausts make. There's an ICE BMW 1 series over the road with twin big bore exhausts that farts (exhaust) and wheezes (dump valve) when it starts up which then reverses out the drive. The air actually vibrates from the resonance. Heaven knows what it sounds like inside the car.

Remember that once transport is fully electrified the general background noise in towns and cities will go down and electric vehicles should be easier to hear anyway.

Off topic, but there was far more to the coffee spill story than people realized. This is a decent article on what really happened snd why McD’s got hammered.

I studied that case up and down years ago.

There is a reason why it’s so commonly cited in the “ridiculous lawsuits” category:

Personal responsibility.

She admits she spilled coffee on herself. That should be the end of the story. Whether it was 170, 185 or 190 degrees…. It will burn you.

What’s next? Sue Kraft because they make me boil their mac n cheese and the boiling water burned me?

Sue a knife company for making their knives “too sharp?”

She misused the product (spilled it). Would be entirely different if McDs threw it at her.

Lawsuits like this are the reason why they have to print (don’t put on head) on plastic bags.

On that note, dry ice bags have lots of fun projects to try…

Lol I about blew my hand off as a kid. First time I ever “sprayed blood.” I don’t think I ever told my parents about that one.

Full disclosure - I have not read each post in this now 18 page thread :)

Is this only equipped on US MMEs? I don't remember hearing any beeping noise on the test drives I took here in Canada, and I definitely backed out of the parking stall.

Also have not seen any European reviews on Youtube mention it - anyone Up North or over the pond wanna chime in?
