Hi all- we’ve had our ‘23 for about a month now. Last night I kept hearing the fans kick on sporadically while charging. This was quite some time after being driven (one time was midnight, about 3 hours after driving). The temps were cool in the upper 60s too. I know they kick in for managing battery temp, but is that strange?

This morning the car was fully charged, but did notice the end result was the same % but the range in miles was down from what it would usually be at that %.

am I overthinking this?

Yes you are overthinking.

The batteries naturally heat up while charging so the fans will come on (unless its like really cold then it will sloooowly charge).

Your range is based on temps (since you said it was cooler it will read fewer miles) and your recent driving habits--take the car to the track lately?

Nothing to worry about.

Cool air will help keep your battery cool.

But only with airflow. Thus the fans.

As far as the range….. yup, temp dependent. Search about half the threads posted here in January for the answers as to why. The keywords “winter range” should yield a few results.

Thanks all! The range thing I figured was the sudden drop in temps last night. The random fans kicking on seemed odd, especially since it hasn’t done it as often when it was actually warm the last few weeks at night. Thanks for the reassurance!

If you're charging at 48amps, consider lowering to 40amps and you may not get the fans coming on, if they are noticeable to you.

Eh I’ll chime in and say I’m definitely surprised your fans are kicking on. My car will be driven hard at temps above 100F and the fans still won’t come on while charging 85% of the time. They probably adjusted the fan curve to help with HVBJB and degradation during summer months but didn’t release an OTA for it.

lol no, the car is right outside my window, like 3 feet away so it’s really evident when it kicks on when the only other sound is crickets. Especially with the dogs’ ingrained need to tell me something is up lol.

I've lowered the current from 40 amps to 20, it doesn't matter if 90% is reached at 1 am or at 5

same - this stops the fans from needing to come on while charging and generally keeps everything cooler. It easily reaches the desired charge state.

Rarely do I need to charge at the 48 amps (HomeFlex charger),but don’t want to go to too much hassle to adjust it for when I do want a faster charge. Is there an easy way to turn this down?

You need to download the ChargePoint Installer app to change it. You can't change it in the regular app anymore.

The fans coming on while charging is mostly to dissipate heat generated by the charger electronics doing the power conversion. How often the fans come on is related to the ambient temperature, whether or not you’ve recently driven the vehicle, and your current charge rate.

If you drive short trips, and do short charges, you may not notice fans. But if you are charging for several hours at 40+ amps you probably will notice fans.
