Spoke with the Ford engineering department that handles vehicle safety today. Still waiting to take my Mustang in the shop no one can provide loaners at this time so I'm waiting for my Ford flex which is in the shop still awaiting an exhaust system that has been ordered five separate times and they keep canceling the order or send in the incorrect cat back exhaust system. The replacement seatbelt through the dealer and hopefully within the next few days I will be able to get this resolved. I also want to note that I also noted the front seat belts were starting to fray as well. I learned something from the engineering department there are some special times to help keep the rear seatbelts from binding with the seats when they're filled it down flat this isn't something I experience because the seats were folded down flat once and never used again that way and I've only had a total of four people sit in the backseat of the car so hopefully I'll get to the bottom of unfortunate there was no other damage that was visible the tear was not visibly seen it was inside the housing and may be inside the retractor as it was coming out your door so it has nothing to do with rodents or any other kind of third-party action and everything to do with something that was going on with with the retractors. I'll be posting some more detailed photos.

This email is to confirm we received your vehicle complaint submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Thank you for this public service as it is through actions like yours that together we can save lives on America's roadways.

Your tracking number assigned by NHTSA for this issue is 11453088. Please keep this number for your records and for future reference. Once your complaint has been processed, you will be able to view it online and find any related documents. Please allow two business days for NHTSA to review your complaint.

What happens next?

Your complaint will be reviewed by NHTSA technical staff and entered into our database. If any additional information is needed, a NHTSA investigator will contact you.

Every complaint is taken seriously, reviewed in detail and analyzed for defects trends. Your complaint is important because it helps to inform NHTSA, other vehicle owners and manufacturers about potential safety concerns. Such information helps save lives, and we encourage you to share the resources available at NHTSA.gov with your family, friends and others in your community.

Will my vehicle be recalled?

When a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a car or item of motor vehicle equipment creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that car or equipment. That can be done by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund (for equipment) or, in rare cases, repurchasing the car.

If your vehicle is included in a recall, the manufacturer will contact you. Sign up to receive recall email alerts from NHTSA if there's ever a recall involving your vehicle, tire or child seat.

If you have any other questions regarding your complaint, please contact NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation:

  • Phone: 888-327-4236, Monday-Friday, 8:00AM to 8:00PM EST(Spanish-speaking representatives available)
    TTY: 888-424-9153
(Please have your ODI number referenced above available.)

  • Email: https://www.nhtsa.gov/about-nhtsa/contact-us
(Please indicate your ODI Number referenced above in the contact form.)

Thank you for contacting us and playing a critical role in helping to keep our roads safe.

But with a dealer today Ford sent the seatbelts and I was hoping it would be a quick turnaround in repair unfortunately Ford decided to hold my car hostage. They didn't do any work on it and now we're waiting on Ford engineering to provide the dealer with some kind of list that they need to go through due to the fact of this thing openly failing so easily thank God I did not have children in the car. Anyways Ford motor company does not do a good job of communicating with its customers that is for sure beware of them they are shady and underhanded. The dealer was nice enough to talk me off the ledge and tell me what was going on but Ford motor company even though I own the car outright decided that they were going to tell the dealer what they could and couldn't do even though they agreed to fix the warranty with no further interruption or delay they decided to have a delay without my consent which is really wrong.

With the severity of what you explained and photographed it's understandable they want to throughly and properly investigate it to see if this was an outlier, user-error (not sure how), or something merits a dealer-hold and recall.

This isn't like your cupholders being replaced, this is some serious shit, and they want to find the root cause - understandably.

I already had a lengthy conversation with their engineer and they had stated to me that they had all the information they needed and that the parts were at the dealer and I needed to make time to get there to have them make the repair brought the car in notified Ford and the dealer that I was bringing it in so they could make a repair always good I notified the dealer and for two days before I brought it in the email no responses to those emails so I brought the car in. Then for some reason the service manager decided to call Ford and the name intern said that we need to send you a list of things well why couldn't Ford send a list of things weeks ago when this was all initiated no they have to have another engineer send them some list of things that they need to do with the defective seatbelts meanwhile I'm the one that gets stuck in service purgatory all they decide what they're going to do without even communicating to me well that is just bullshit. Ford is the worst at communicating with its customers and if it wasn't for their social media people monitoring this account I'm sure that they wouldn't even give a damn . Not to mention that multiple times I brought cars in for erroneous errors and continue to happen and shop in the Ford pass app but the dealer that happening anymore. There is definitely a ghost in the machine and it's not good especially when the seatbelts are tearing the front seat belts are now frame and I wonder how long they're going to last thank God I don't have children and they were in the backseat when it happened

Hopefully you don't have rodents. Had that happen to an old car of mine. Seatbelrs looked very similar. Rodents get in anywhere. May not be a bad idea to get some rodent deterrents wherever the car is parked. Godspeed friend
I have seen rodents do that as well as well as eating a cable assembly that cost three grand. Most people think there are none around our area but they’re really everywhere. Especially if you service your car and they leave it outside …lots like that are susceptible since it gives them a lot of warmth and they actually eat plastic. It could be any of 50 different rodents across America

Just so you guys know it's been confirmed it wasn't rodents so you were completely off base here you don't know what you're talking about and this was an absolute catastrophic seatbelt failure and has been investigated by the highway traffic and safety Vero they are convinced it has nothing to do with rodents so bringing that up is only making you feel better about the possibility that you could be driving around in the car they can have at seatbelt's failing get over it realize that this is a potential issue and be before warned hopefully it's isolated they've already had a recall for seatbelt anchors which are related to the seatbelt mechanism itself

I understand your frustration and I hope things get resolved in a more timely manner moving forward. The odd thing to me is that there does not appear to be any other owner experiencing this issue. I do not have my car yet but when it arrives I certainly intend to keep my eye on it! Just because no one else has not had the problem does not mean it isn’t lurking out there!

Did you ever get this resolved? Interested to find out what the dealer found.
