If you started your car at home, not remote start, but get in and start it, after a few minutes it should start to download and as long as you’re connected to Wi-Fi it should download it over that connection.

I have had an update download over Wi-Fi, but only one of the dozens I’ve received.
here's a dumb question about this - if you use wireless CarPlay or android auto, does that prevent the computer from joining your home wifi? i'm pretty sure only one wifi connection at a time is possible on a given radio, but i guess it could be the case that the car has 2 wifi radios.

the car still seems to show the wifi logo when wireless CarPlay is active but maybe they're just saying they have made a wifi connection to your phone.

No. The sync Wi-Fi connection and the CarPlay/Android Auto Wi-Fi connection are separate and can coexist.

Sync actually has 2 Wi-Fi devices that connect to your home Wi-Fi. If you go in your home router and look at the connection logs you’ll see the car connecting as 2 different devices. Both are separate from the CarPlay/Android auto connection.

I believe the cars hotspot is entirely separate too.

Pretty much the car needs to be out and about to start a download or queue up an update.
Not sure about this. My car was sitting in the dealer's garage since Thursday, and over the weekend (body repair and no one moved it) and was updated this (Monday) morning to 4.2.2. Didn't see that coming.

i didn't notice this - i see one device with the name SYNC but didn't notice another one. are the mac addresses of the two radios similar? i'll have to go look. while trying to download 4.1.2 i saw very little traffic to the SYNC mac but after i found out the update only touched GWM i figured maybe it was small. contrast this with the tesla OTA updates which could take 5-10 minutes to download.

so in the end there are 3 radios. what modules do these radios belong to?

I haven't gotten it either. But then again, i'm on 3.5.4.2. So I'm a bit behind as is.
I am also still on 3.5.4.2 My car had troubles receiving updates with version 1.7. Needed the dealer to fix the problem. Now Ford wants me to take it to the dealer again to see what the issue is. This car has spent more than 30 days at the dealership for various warranty repairs in the 19 months I have owned it.

I love the rolling updates! I usually know it’s coming by looking at the OTA status JSON on ford’s site.
OK so I'm a newbie and also not a computer person. I can get to the part where it shows code, but how do I interpret it? Thanks!

The two networks car called Sync and mdm9650-tcu. If I had to guess I would say that Sync is the GWM (gateway module, the cars router) or maybe the APIM (Sync) and the mdm9650-tcu is the TCU module (telematics control module).

A GWM update would be relatively small.

I'm not who you were asking but.....

The three MAC addresses are not similar.

I see three different hostnames connecting
SYNC
SYNC_ (this connects but my router logs no traffic being passed)
mdm9650-tcu

My home modem router is setup to allow access by MAC addresses. The only MAC address from the car that I am allowing is the one associated with SYNC.

Am I limiting and affecting the car’s connection to my home network?

I have not noticed any problems, but I just got my car. Well, maybe there is one problem … cannot get charging times and limits to always work. It is a daily guess as to what will happen.

do you mind reporting the OUIs of these hosts? for whatever reason only SYNC seems to be requesting a lease with a name. i see some other OUIs on the subnet the car is on but i'm not sure which, if any, are the TCU.

thanks. i didn't realize these were listed in the car.

strangely i have 78:55:cd bound with SYNC and 28:38:5c with no name. but i think this proves the TCU wifi is functioning properly as both are there.

i don't see 84:eb:18 in my logs at all. i wonder if this might be the MAC for the projection stuff.

You have 23 MME not a 23 MY, people will think you have a tesla, and they dont have a camera button, no 360 degree cameras for them!
