What would be your proposed solution? They wanted to get rid of HERE maps and Google is viewed as the best.
There is no singular definition to define “best”.

Choice would be preferred. Nowhere in the release notes I have read was this disclosed. Ford needs to be more clear about things that affect how ones data will be used so they have the opportunity to adopt a change or not.

That would be nice, but there's no way that they're going to maintain two separate paid mapping APIs in their app. They had to pick one and stick with it moving forward. In the interest of transparency, they did give you a disclaimer and the opportunity to decline sharing any data with Google—at least they did that instead of automatically sharing your info without asking like 90% of other companies would. I bet if you hadn't seen that disclaimer, you wouldn't have even given it a second thought.

If you despise Google, you have the option of not using the maps then.

And if you didn't know, Ford and Google have partnered to develop the next generation of vehicle user interfaces using Android Automotive. So Google stuff is going to be popping up more in Fords over the next few years.

My question is, "Are they sending my location (and who knows what other) data to Google or are they asking for a general geographical set of maps to display and doing the work on device?" My guess is sending my data to Google. That's the payment for using their maps.

They did that only after the app was installed. That is not much of a choice. I could have disabled the app refresh and watched the experience fade over time or be completely stopped, just like so much other car tech.

Yes, I am aware of the Android direction, and I will definitely factor that into any future purchase decisions as well.

At this point I have three EV’s. Two of which have never tried to alter my day to day interaction with the car via updates in 7 and 4 years respectively. I have one that has and the experience has not been great and continues to disappoint in new ways. I hate to say it but, over the lifecycle, I have had a better overall ownership experience with the two former ones.

I know what it means to support software at scale for an extended time. It is hard and at some point you make decisions to control your cost while giving customers an experience that builds trust. Nothing about what is going on with my Mach-E, a car I absolutely love, is building trust (or brand loyalty) for me.

In FordPass go to Account > Legal & Privacy > Privacy > Manage Data with Third Parties Set Preferences > Learn more to see the types of data being shared. Precise locations are shared so they can be rendered on the map (such as seeing a pin for your car's location). You can also turn off data sharing with Google there if you choose.

That's the payment for using their maps.
Pretty sure Ford pays to use Google's API just like everybody else does...

Don't need to share precise location. Send precise location from car to device. Device asks for general vicinity map from Google. Device draws map and places the pin for car location. No need whatsoever for my precise location to go to Google. EVER! Keep all personal data on device, never give it to a 3rd party.

Is there a way to force refresh? (drag down to force refresh in old app)
They removed the refresh feature because it is supposed to be connected a different way that allows a real time connection. For example, dragging the target charge to the new target automatically sends the update to your car. And opening the Vehicle Heath screen automatically shows you the current tire pressure and odometer reading. No need to refresh.

Or you could use Waze.
Yea too bad every company is owned by the select few. Waze is no exception
I believe Google owns Waze and of course they share data. If you use Waze, the Google knows.

I am with the people who want to keep their data private, but it is impossible if you own a smart phone that runs Google or Apple OS. You need to switch to a flip phone that has simple text and then they can't track you. At least that way.

Does anyone really want to take that step? Not me. My smart phone is too convenient.

I'm sure this has been mentioned plenty, but I just noticed that Charge Rate is now shown to .1 kW. Is it weird that this is easily one of my favorite changes?

In theory. When you hit location while it's driving, it doesn't update in real time.

Carrying around a cell phone makes your location available to far more people than Google maps does.
