I have a Mach-E Premium AWD extended range. Manufactured July 2023, purchased brand new November 2023. Less than 1,200 miles driven. My most recent software update was 6.13.0 on 12/16/2023. The front passenger side exterior door buttons do not appear to work correctly and never have. The exterior E-latch (unlock/open button) always works EVENTUALLY, but usually (possibly always) takes two or three presses to get the door open. The exterior lock button NEVER works. (More details below). If I can't get this figured out, I will take it to the dealership, but I would appreciate any advice I can get from the good folks here on the forum first:
  • How might I resolve this myself?
  • What should I know before contacting the dealership to get the help I need from them?
    • Are there any known software fixes/updates/patches that could address my problems?
    • Is this likely to require a hardware replacement?
Regarding the exterior E-Latch, it always seems to need two or more presses to open the door. This happens if I try to open the locked door with the key in my pocket, or if I’m already sitting in the unlocked car and a passenger tries to get in the vehicle. The rear passenger doors never seem to have this problem and they open with the first press.

Likewise, with the exterior lock button on the front passenger door. I have never gotten it to work. The driver’s door lock button and the two rear door lock buttons always work fine. I have read posts here and on Reddit about others having this problem. Some people recommend holding the button or using a swiping motion, but nothing works for me.

I read the manual and watched the E-Latch “tutorial” video online and nothing indicated this was normal behavior.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give. I love the car but this “minor” annoyance can be very frustrating at times. (The running joke that my car lets everyone in immediately except my wife is starting to wear thin).

Edit/Update: I did some more testing and nothing fixed the problem. Observations and things I tried were:
  • I noticed the front passenger door E-Latch NEVER lights up. Regardless of locked status or key proximity. The E-Latch always lights up on the other three doors.
  • I re-tested opening the doors. All doors opened with one push of the E-Latch, except the front passenger door which ALWAYS took two, or usually three clicks to open. Sometimes the exterior lights flashed on the first push, but the door remained closed. This was consistent for all three realistic use scenarios:
    • From locked, with the key in my pocket.
    • From unlocked, with the key in my pocket.
    • From unlocked, with all keys (including PAAK) out of range of the car.
  • Cycled the various lock settings off and tested the doors. Nothing improved.
  • Cycled the various lock settings back on and tested the doors. Nothing improved.

Auto unlock enabled?
I will take a look at that, thanks. My understanding is that Autounlock is a feature for when you come to a stop after driving. My problems include the time before I have even driven anywhere. Anything's worth a try, though!

I have noticed the chance of the button working the first go is great when the button lights up upon approaching and you hold the button down until it opens. Auto Unlock enabled the default setting. You are right it’s not about approaching the vehicle.

Thanks for this clue! Paying attention to the lights, I realized the front passenger door E-Latch NEVER lights up, regardless of key proximity or other conditions. The E-latch lights up on the three other doors. I edited my post to include this information. It seems to support the idea that something is specifically wrong with the front passenger door compared to the others.

I'd say that since the front works sporadically and the rear works always, there's likely something wrong with the front door. Take it to a dealership and show them the problem. They should be able to fix it, though it might take some time to get any parts. Just be sure to tell them you don't want them to leave the door disassembled while waiting for parts!

Good morning! If you send over a DM with your VIN and Ford dealer info, I can look into your concerns on my end.

Dropping back into this post to provide an update and say thanks to everyone who chimed in with advice. In the end, this was a warranty issue and the front passenger electronic door panel had to be replaced. Kudos to the service department at Tuttle-Click Ford in Irvine, CA, for making the repair as painless as possible. It took 5 days total (checked in on Monday and it was ready on Friday) and they gave me a loaner for the duration.
