Obviously I want to find out without getting into an accident :).

I know the rear collision assist braking works because I have had a few false alarms.

On the front, I have tried inching close to my garage door but the brakes don't come on so wondering if there is some other way to test or know.

Don't think that it works at really low speeds.

it won’t work at super low speeds. Mine came on yesterday, I was going to turn right and was going about 12 mph when the car in front stopped suddenly. I got a bit close and stopped too but my car popped up saying pre collision assist.

The same way you know that your airbags work. Trust.

Put 2 plastic barrels in your driveway or parking lot and head for them...

Mine is on high sensitivity and will go off if a car in front of me turn right but I don't slow down enough.
It will also go off if I back out in my driveway but cars in the street are passing.

Try that.

With it on high sensitivity it was always going off for me if someone was turning either left or right in front of us and the car thought that it wasn't getting out of the way fast enough.

Mercedes was one of the first to have this. 15 years ago, the CEO of the company I worked for had just took delivery of his new car. He was out having dinner with some friends bragging about his car. As they were leaving, he decided to demonstrate the anti-collision feature and rammed onto a parked car. It turns out that the system was either not enabled by the dealer or was turned off by the dealer before delivery. Oops!

I've had mine brake for me once or twice on the freeway. I'll get the Pre-Collision warning every now and then but typically I'm already on the brake so its hard to tell if the car is helping or not.

Actually, I tried my reverse assist out with a few recycling bins in my driveway and it definitely works. I’d say that, you REALLY wanted to test the forward system, find a big, empty parking lot, make big pile of empty cardboard boxes, and drive at them? I’m not sure the system would recognize them as an obstacle to stop for.
which reminds me - I’ve always wondered, I’d forward collision assist supposed to try to stop for non-vehicles? Like people? Cyclists? Deer?

It tells you this right in the manual.

WARNING: The system does not
detect
vehicles moving in a different
direction or animals. Apply the brakes
when necessary. Failure to follow this
instruction could result in the loss of
control of your vehicle, personal injury or
death.

Pedestrian Detection Limitations
Pedestrian detection is active at speeds
up to 50 mph (80 km/h).
Pedestrian detection functions optimally
when detected hazards are clearly
identifiable. System performance may
reduce in situations where pedestrians are
running, partly obscured, have a complex
background, or cannot be distinguished
from a group.
Cyclist Detection Limitations
Cyclist detection is active at speeds up to
50 mph (80 km/h).
Cyclist detection functions optimally when
detected hazards are clearly identifiable.
System performance may reduce in
situations where cyclists are fast-moving,
partly obscured, have a complex
background, or cannot be distinguished
from a group.
