On cold mornings, when I start the Mach-e and turn on the heater, I can hear a gush of coolant run twards some kind of heater exchanger situated very close to the instrument panel. Sounds like a flushing/flooding sound.

More like an electric water heater or boiler. A heating element heats coolant, then that is circulated to the heater core (radiator) in the cabin where air is blown through it. The coolant can also be diverted to the battery if it requires heating.

Yes, it's the same approach -- just like an old electric water heater. Resistance heating.

If it were to use the AC compressor, it'd be 2-4x more efficient however.
