as noted before, 12v batteries dying and car not starting issues are seen on many different EVs. This just posted about Ionic 5’s with issues.

Edit. Corrected video link.

Wait you don’t have to rip apart the entire frunk to get to the 12v??
Well the Ioniq 5 doesn't really have a frunk. I guess it might hold a small pizza?

This issue is appearing in many electric vehicles making me wonder if perhaps the large battery pack is just pulling the charge out of the 12 V. They may need some simple resistant switching to separate the 12 V from the main battery pack when the car is not being used and all systems are off. Battery bleed is a real thing.

It hasn’t hit me yet but it seems to be hitting a lot of people

They aren’t way electrically connected.
12V and 400V just won’t go together well. The 12V simply closes/powers a contact to hook up the 400V. There is a step down converter from the 400v to the 12V to act as a charger for the 12V (replaces the alternator functionality) but that won’t flow power the other way.

When my 12V died I had TSB that applied an update to make sure the step down converter stayed working while charging - since that was killing the 12V keeping the 400v contact activated during charging while the car was off; and subsequently not charging the 12V.

I loved the plastic protective film on the positive terminal cover, wouldn't want that to get scratched now LOL!

I like the much easier battery access, Ford made a mistake on the Mach-E there. Carrying a portable jump pack like that is a still a good idea on EVs. With OTA updates, a bad update with a bug could suddenly cause battery drain issues in the future. This will probably be the case until manufacturers develop robust software that includes a 12V battery watchdog capable of shutting down "stuck" modules that do not go to sleep properly. With modern agile development tactics used by many, there isn't enough time spent on thorough testing to find some of these bugs.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but why even the need for 12V batteries in EVs?

To run all of the systems. The electronics run off of 12V-. Only the motors run off of the HV battery. It would be pretty dngerous to have any part of the vehicle with which the user interacts to run off of HV and 12V- is the standard for automotive electronics. ??

I think this really just goes to show that some of the software bugs we see isn't just Ford being bad with software its happening to many different manufactures.

I also think that the 12v system gets overlooked in general. ICE cars have had 12v issues as well. I think its thought of as something that just works because its been around forever, but on an EV especially, everything requires 12v to function at all.

Some kind of converter would not be feasible?
