iPhone Qi Wireless Charging

I tried them, didn't really work out like I'd hoped. They aren't strong enough to "grab" the phone, and even after fiddling with the phone to get it to hold on them, charging eventually stopped after a few minutes.

I've just given up on the built-in charging mat. Even when I've had it stay connected/charging for an extended period it's very slow (while using Apple Carplay). Using an aftermarket magsafe charging plugged into the USB C port there, it actually charges my phone while using Carplay.

Exactly, ended up running a Fast charge puck from the center console socket to the front tray .

Another update: So the iPhone 12 Pro will not consistently charge for more than 30-60 seconds on the wireless charging pad even without a case. I tried an iPhone XR and that one works fine even with a case on. I decided to do another experiment. I took off the rubber pad that covers the wireless charging pad and placed the iPhone 12 Pro directly on the charging pad (with case on). I assumed it would slide around too much and lose connection but instead it maintained connection through the whole ride which was about an hour. It looks like something about Fords rubber pad is causing the problem but only with this one phone model. Maybe it's too thick?

At least that gives me an option now. If I want to use the wireless charger just pull off the rubber pad for the time being

I did order a 3D printed template/holder but it didn't quite fit my phone with (non-magsafe aftermarket) case. In the meantime, I have taken to placing my iPhone 12 pro in the exact center of the charging area (my initial instinct was to have it against the top, bottom, or one of the sides). Keeping it centered charges it consistently 95+% of the time, and I don't find that the phone (with an aftermarket case) moves much, if at all.

One scenario that I think is interfering with charging now that the weather has warmed up - once or twice, on hotter days after my car was in the sun all day, the iphone appeared to cut off wireless charging after a little bit, which I believe is expected iphone behavior (hot day, +carplay with waze, the phone was quite warm charging through the rubber mat and my case).

I may try to modify the 3D printed template solution a little, but I have trained myself to center the phone without it, seems to do the trick most of the time.

I have an iPhone X and it stays connected fine, it just doesn't charge at all. I'm just going to plug it in.

I also bought the 3D printed solution and it did not fit my Otterbox case. My iPhone 12 will not charge for more than a few seconds and it does not slide around at all. I am just reverting to plugging in, this wireless charger is no more useful than PAAK, which I cannot even enable due to network errors. I got an extra FOB, so do not need that feature either.

This is unfortunate. The iPhone 12 series (mini regular, and Pro) are not on this list.

Good thing hardly anyone uses an iPhone.

Please don't be offended but just want to make sure you know the charging area is only on the left side. My charging works flawlessly with iPhone 12 Pro. Good luck!

Mine does too on my iPhone 12 Pro when I place it on the mat without its case. As soon as I place it in the case, I loose the ability to charge it magnetically. My case is a non Apple case so that's probably why as there are no additional magnets embedded in the third party cases (from China) or they are too thick (or both). So I just plug the phone into the USB C port and it charges without a hitch. It's too bad that I lose the ability to do Qi charging but I'm not going to pay Apple another $59 for the case and $59 for the magnetic wallet when the case I purchased was only $35 and flips open to show the phone and three slots for credit card(s)/licenses, medical cards, etc. I don't need to take an additional wallet as everything is there (too bad PaaK doesn't work 100% of the time as that would mean no FOB either).

I have an Xs Max in an Otterbox Defender case. It does charge for me, but in the 45 minutes it takes me to drive home from work, I gain about 6-7% charge on my phone, while it gets very hot. End result, I don’t use the wireless charger in the car. I am considering putting a MagSafe charging base on the underside of the console armrest when I finally get around to upgrading my phone.

I’m having the same issue with silicone apple MagSafe charger on my 12pro. Charges for 30 sec and then I look down and it’s stopped. When I move it slightly it’ll go back on until it stops again.

I have an iPhone XR and the wireless charging seems to work fine, except that it's slower than my grandma running the 100 meters, and the phone does get hot. I plugged into the standard USB and it wasn't much faster, if at all, but the USB C is high-speed and MUCH faster.

Randy - I keep my iPhone 12 Pro in a 3rd party portfolio case with my drivers license, medical card, codes for Mach E and one credit card. Also $40 in cash in the sleeve behind the cards. The rubber case and leather portfolio are too thick for the Qi charger to work (went to the Apple store and checked it out). Just out of curiosity I took the phone out of its case and put it on the surface where the magnets are for the Qi charger. I let it sit for about five minutes while it charged. I picked it up after that and the phone was HOT! Does this happen with your phone? Does the phone get hot enough where you're concerned about it? I have a USB C cord which I plug into the phone and it works great. It never feels hot when I unplug it.

This is par for the course, unfortunately. I thought this was just a Ford problem, but my wife's new RAV4 Prime does the exact same thing with either of our phones on its Qi charger. Maybe Qi and the vibration while driving just don't mix? Do any cars have solid Qi charging while driving?

Can't say that I've known any built-in Qi chargers that worked very well, or were up to current supported wattage/speeds.

If you got a newer iPhone, you're better off getting a magsafe charger and even just plugging it into one of the USB ports up front. Would be fastest with a 20W 12V adapter, but then you'd have to run the cord into the armrest area.

I use an off-brand magsafe plugged into the front USB port, and it does pretty well for me.
