Hi fellow Mach E enthusiasts!

I'm suspecting that my car's liftgate can sometimes open on its own.

On a couple of occasions, I've found my liftgate open in the garage. I cannot imagine that I accidentally pressed a button on the key or via the app. The keys are in my dresser drawer without anything on top of them, and the app is rarely used plus has a pretty good press-and-hold feature to prevent accidental functions.

I have two young kids, including a 3 year old, so it's possible she opened it each of these times, but she says she didn't and I honestly doubt she would. Not in her nature to go out to the garage and she's never shown interest in messing with the car.

Sadly, this time there is damage on the edge of the liftgate door.

Has anyone else experienced inexplicable liftgate opening?

I’ve had this happen a few times but thankfully it never hit the garage door. I’m sorry to hear that this happened and to see the lift gate damage ?
It started happening to mine after I had enabled the hands free (foot wave) feature via forscan. It hasn’t happened a single time since I toggled it off in the menu. I don’t know if that’s the exact cause but I would try turning that off (if it’s on) and you don’t use it.

Does your car have option to open lift gate by waving your foot under it? Handsfree lift gate?

If so, sometimes flies or bugs, kids running around or near, or you walking by it triggers it to open.

Mine has never opened accidentally, but I've heard reports of it happening to others, so I disabled the hands free "foot wave" option, which was never particularly reliable anyway. I find that it's not that hard to open manually.

My dog’s tail tends to open mine due to the hands free opening option. He likes it because once it opens he jumps in the back all ready to go.

Thanks for the replies so far. Mine is a 2022 built in July so I don't think it has the foot-wave liftgate feature!

Check in the settings, you might be surprised.
What’s the odds a fob is left in a purse or laptop bag, possibly pushing the button.

Yeah, @AstralLiving . Check the settings, then check for fobs being squished. After that check on the next available appointment at the dealer of your choice as something isn't right.

I had an Escape that this would happen from time to time which had the kick to open feature. I've read on this forum where multiple people have had this happen to them and several have had damaged lift gates like yours. The first thing I did on both my premium and GT was disable the kick to open feature so that wouldn't happen. Like others said, check to see if you have it and disable it if you do.

@azerik I' m glad I don't have this feature. Right now my garage is a zero emissions garage because a dog lives in a slot. Another EV will in the way that would be my housemate's. My dog has my man cave turned into a his dog cave. He passes that area in the lift gate in my car I know. And I leave the FOB in car. But if I had the feature I definitely would turn it off.

I’m in the camp that you need a BCM update.

When functioning properly, stray animals, bugs, blowing trash, etc. cannot trigger the kick-to-open. It only works if the fob is within 3’ of the tailgate.
