Oh, man! I am so sorry. So many trashy people. I recently found a very so slight door ding in my GT500 and I park away from every car.

No excuse. Terrible. Do you have a dashcam that captured her plates perhaps?
We always park way out in BFE when shopping, but, if someone ever got butthurt at me when parking I would park somewhere far away from them for fear of this exact scenario occurring. I hope your fix is reasonable and done well my friend.

Even though there is a dashcam, can circumstantial evidence help to catch the suspect? I gave up having nice one as I thought I need a 3-channel or 4-channel system anyway.

Get with mall / store security. Cameras are everywhere so hopefully they can call up the video. Act fast as they only keep so many days of video on file.

Maybe, maybe not. It could help find her but we’ll never really know if she was the perpetrator, right? But, you’d be surprised at the power a quick police report and a visit from a detective to ask a few questions can have in getting someone to admit to a misdeed. And subsequently, some form of voluntary compensation from said perpetrator. Never know.

I’d be very surprised if a detective is willing to help to catch someone who keyed a car. (I’m not born in US and heard so many stories that police officers just say ā€˜let it go if no one was killed’ for most minor crimes.)

They won’t. They probably get 100 ring doorbell crime videos a day.

How do they identify the person in the video?

Unlike the movies, they don’t use facial recognition software against a national database to track down the criminal.

Your absolute best case result will be that you actually KNOW the person who did it and you take them to small claims court.

Two ways to avoid this: 1) Don't park near any other cars. 2) Whenever in doubt let the other person have the spot, never force the issue.

Some years ago we had a crime spree in the area, mostly break-ins looking for drug money. They caught the guy and the break-ins ended.

People were screaming to put in gates and cameras. I met with the Sheriff and he said very clearly that neither would make any difference, and that unless you catch the person in the act on camera, it's useless. We added some interior cameras for that very reason. Seeing Waldo drive into your complex, or stand next to your car, may identify Waldo, but if they don't show Waldo scratching it, then you've got bupkus, unless the police get Waldo to confess.

I was already out of the car as she drove up to me claiming I took the spot...

Report filed. Officer said he would try and look at mall cameras.

Well, it depends on where you live and the local police department’s caseload, right? If the OP is in a big city or an area where there is already a backlog for minor property crimes then, no. But, where we live ( Round Rock, TX. ) the local police dept. detective came out and assisted us with a fraudulent credit card use issue within 3 business days. To sit on the internet and armchair quarterback as if we know what will happen in someone else’s area is pure speculation.
