If you are thinking of upgrading your tires to something wider, Alex from Alex on Autos has performed such an upgrade followed by a range test to give you an idea of what to expect if you do so as well.

Teaser alert, their was a negligible range impact of only 10 miles difference between the stock 225 tires, and the upgraded 245's. The difference is so negligible in fact that he attributes much of the difference to more spirited driving with the upgraded tires during his range test.

Makes you wonder why they didn’t fit wider tyres from factory. Minimal affect on range and good boost to performance and handling.
Because range is huge from a marketing perspective, anything that would detriment that for little benefit doesn’t make sense. Plus your average driver will be more than pleased with the 225, they’re fine for the limits that one should be pushing on the streets.

Yeah true. Guess it leaves them more scope for the gt to feel better too. Not that I’ve taken delivery yet but I’ve never been that bothered with the ‘skinny tyres’ it has. Here in the U.K. at least most normal cars are on similar width tyres. Even my Alfa runs them fine

The 3% loss he saw probably had more to do with going to a stickier summer tire than the width. A 245 in a low rolling resistance all-season would probably see even closer to original range. I'm betting we'll see the GT's real world numbers extremely close to the Premium extended range AWD models.

We’re going to upgrade the OEM summer tires that we optioned on our 4X to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4s in size 245/50-19 shortly after we take delivery. The specs say they fit a 7”- 8.5” rim width and that they are 2 lbs lighter per tire than the OEM 225/55s. Removing 8 lbs of rotating mass is a big deal and may offset the extra rolling resistance of the wider contact patch.

But, if we also decide to get aftermarket wheels they’re going to look better than the ones Alex got. Those are rubbish on a Mach E.

This test is not reliable enough to conclude it is only a 10 mile range difference. First test is 4 months ago, maybe 10 degree or so cooler, that alone would make a significant difference.

And real world range doesn't necessarily translate to EPA range. EPA range is calculated rather than determined through testing, so the narrower tires probably have an outsized impact on the calculated range. If (in a made-up example) the 20mm wider tires only have a ~10 mile "real world" impact but reduce the EPA calculation by 25 miles, Ford can't really market that. They can only publish and market the EPA range on the window sticker.

If that was true then it's even more evident that larger tires don't contribute that much range loss. He also admitted to have not driven as efficiently as his previous test.

4 months ago it was likely colder so the range difference (loss) is likely substantial more than 10 miles...

I remember him saying it was "toasty" during the review so it was likely not cold enough to use heating.

Even a temperature of 26 degrees Celsius (against 18 Celsius) will improve range by a small percentage? in my case it will make more than 10 mile difference?

I really wish he would have included a shot from behind so we could see how the wider tires look from that angle. From the back is where the skinny tires look the most off on the Mach-E to me.
