Trading in the '21 for a '24 later this week

Asked the dealer to do me a solid and fully update all modules on the vehicle prior to picking it up.

They're giving me a runaround that "we can't just install an update unless told to do so by a publication from Ford or a recall."

Anyone have any easy wording to get around this? Seems silly.

Ford dealers don't get paid by Ford to fix what isn't broken. So they won't do updates unless they can claim a warranty issue..... or you get out your wallet and pay for the updates yourself.
Yea - i was hoping I'd get sales to have service do me a solid on a new car...

The service manager told me "it's illegal to update a car without instructions from ford" ... ha....

Premium AWD ER in Vapor Blue.

Bitter sweet parting with my '21... but saving on some investment (tires, some door damage) that ford won't bang me on for the return...and it's a color I liked (verses just getting what I could find in the '20 craze!)

While it’s not illegal, it’s probably against the dealer’s policy. Local illegality where the locality is the dealer? Anyhow, the service department doesn’t want to work without getting paid. That’s a service bay and a technician and an FDRS rig that they’re tying up for hours with no way to recoup that time. If you’re going to break out your wallet, the amount of time you will pay for will likely cost you as much as paying for a Mongoose and a power supply (probably more) so it’s more cost-effective to build your own FDRS rig. ?‍♂?

Yea... I just figured that sales would push the service dept to just "do it" or just bill them internally for it and do it as part of a new car delivery... totally get it as randomly bringing a car in

This is what the PDI charge is for in my opinion. They charge you for post delivery inspection on the vehicle you purchase. This is to cover unwrapping the vehicle, cleaning up defects, and checking that the vehicle is in 100% condition to be handed off to the customer. This includes making sure the wheel lug nuts are torqued, coolant levels are topped up, any paint defects are repaired/corrected. AND any software updates that fix known issues with the vehicle being sold should be applied. Any dealer with sitting Mach-e's should be applying updates to these Mach-e's either regularly or prior to sale if they came from factory and since delivery to the lot have had issues fixed with software updates. this is just common sense.....

I bought a 2022 Bolt EUV brand new and it came to me fully prepped and all software updates applied. I didn't have to ask, that's just how GM and their dealerships handle things. This is a huge reason why I had no problems with the vehicle the entire time I owned it. I didn't have to go back to the dealership once.

The Mach-e on the other hand...no software updates were applied, known issues were not fixed or checked, and as a result I have had to make a few dealership visits.

Just tell them it is a condition of the sale. I got a free portable charger and they(owner) paid all the taxes, licenses & fees for mine.

I’m from Canada so maybe it’s different here. I just purchased a 2023 Premium awd extended range that was manufactured in January. I didn’t need to ask them to bring everything up to date. They told me it would take at least the majority of a day to do all the ota updates and also any tsb that it needed.

Yes. You seem to have all the leverage here. It’s not like these cars are flying off the lots. Tell them to fully update it, or no deal. Admittedly, I’m biased because I’m perfectly happy sticking with my 21.

It's probably already up to date. These cars get the OTA updates while on the lot. My 24 is perfect and have had no issues with OTA updates. Look at the build date as well to see how old it is. Don't be that guy that says update it or I'll take my business elsewhere.

They tried telling me it’s all up to date… so I checked myself. Sent them the list of modules to update ;) there’s 9 pending including IMPA

its built mid July but still a handful of updates

If I was going to try to leverage the purchase by including software updates, I'd convert the $value for the time it would take the service department to do the updates into dollars/discount on purchase price.

In other words, OK, you tell me that you would do the update but Ford won't let you. Then instead, discount the purchase price for a few hours labor that you would have done if you could.

What I really mean is that I would value the Mongoose purchase in $'s way more than the dealership doing a few updates before delivery. A Mongoose in the glove department is far more comforting over the lifetime of ownership of the Mach-E.
