Though the article says "Updated July 28, 2023," the data in the graphs has been around for at least nine months. Nothing new.

Worth noting that the mach-E EPA range is listed as 270mi, so the original 2021 spec mach-E was tested. It has been increased twice since then, and the "available" battery capacity has increased from 88kWh to 91kWh. Thus the range numbers have likely improved accordingly as Ford has optimized, though I'm not aware that any independent party has verified this.

I just did a road trip from Southern OR to Stinson Beach, CA and back. Conditions were close to ideal on the way down (average ~75-80F, didn't use AC), plus I dropped about 1700ft elevation. On the other hand, I drove much of it at 70-75mph, so as we know range takes a hit at those speeds. I calculated range to be ~290mi. The return was a bit less favorable (peak 100F, used AC) and of course 1700ft of elevation gain. Steady headwind on I-5 too. Still got a range of roughly 255mi.

Classic Gov't mismanagement!!! So, the feds poke their face into the private sector, I assume for consumer protection, but let different companies test differently which causes erroneous reporting. Huh, sure glad I paid my hard earned tax money for this type of service (ala the DMV)!!!

I am finding out first hand that in Arizona the range calculations are flip flopped. I had great range during the winter but I am getting terrible range in the summer which has been brutal. I believe the external temp guage tops out at 145 degrees because while driving home it doesn't go any higher. Which is causing my fans to go non stop and louder than an ICE vehicle. OK, I'm done venting... ?

I keep looking at the banner photo of the VW, Ford, Tesla and Hyundai and thinking how GM is so noticeably absent from that grouping. It is now August 2023. Where are the Lyriqs? Where are the Blazers? I mean heck, even Fisker is starting to get vehicles into buyers' hands. SMH.

VW/ID.4 does the same. Charging is in miles per hour - which completely varies depending if you are driving in the city or highway.

The fact that Mach-E doesn't report charging data on the screen is also annoying.
Yeah, the MME UI almost seems like it tries to hide the fact that it’s an EV.

One thing I noticed about our Tesla MYLR is the vampire drain. I have sentry mode, cabin temp protection and whatnot turned off but sometimes at work it will chew through 5-8% in the parking lot. Other days it is fine. Haven’t been able to nail it down. Our MME is very good in this department with no vampire drain I’ve noticed in two years.

I almost traded a MME for a MY because of the charging speed. Real world range were not a criteria because I had seen many reports showing MY and MME had about the same range. When I saw a MY charging at EA at about the same speed as my ER premium, I just scrubbed off the idea. MY might be a bit faster but not worth switching. I talked to a friend this weekend who is still in the market for an EV.

I told him MY is cheaper. He said he would pay more for the look of MME. ?
I hate tesla for lots of reasons but this doesn't hold because the model y battery is 30% smaller than the mach e. So the same charging speed results in a shorter charge time. If you road trip a lot it could make a difference. I still haven't used my free 500kwh in almost three years though, so in reality I think dcfc doesn't matter much for most.

When you factor in that the Tesla, in my experience, had a M3 for 3 years, has a lot more phantom drain, and also, when you get below 50 miles, it drops about a percentage point a mile, this is basically a moot point… my Tesla would lose 5-10 miles sometimes overnight w phantom drain, and the MME has been much better in this regard. Again, my real world experience having both cars.

CR stated that they tested the cars with: "The regenerative braking mode was set to its lowest setting for each car to level the playing field." Tesla uses a simplified regenerative braking scheme that is only incorporated into the accelerator. During most of the test runs, adaptive cruise was used, so this should not have influenced the range much, but the Tesla might have gained a few miles had the regenerative braking been set to high as Tesla recommends.

CR tests cars that it buys and owns. Car manufacturers cannot cherry pick the vehicles to be tested. Whereas in the EPA tests and many other situations, some manufacturers do submit/test selected "better" vehicles. In Edmunds EV range tests, the Model Y also came up short of its EPA value, but by only a few miles. (317 vs 326) Whereas, the Mach e exceeded its EPA value. (304 vs 270)

Besides using the alternative EPA mileage test, Tesla runs its cars past the "zero" miles to a point where the car is no longer drive-able. Edmunds has tested this. They found that a 2020 Tesla Y would go 10.3 extra miles. Using this "extra" battery buffer range in the EPA mileage calculation is a bit deceptive, but apparently it is not illegal.

We won't be done "venting" until it cools off. (Bad pun?)
