We are close to purchasing a new Mach E Premium. I had a 240V Outlet installed in my garage a few years ago in anticipation of buying an EV. It comes from a dedicated 50AMP box that was used for an electric stove. My question is, can I just plug something like the Home depot Lectron Charger cable to this outlet and be fine? Or is the 50AMP fuse too high for it? Or, could I just plug the extension cable that, I think, Ford supplies into that outlet and be fine. Also, will it charge faster with a dedicated EV charger plugged in? That ad seems to suggest that it can charge 6 times faster.
Sorry, I did look around to see if I could find my answer, but I didn't...

I am a fan of keeping the NEMA 14-50 outlet.... and even using the mach-e 'portable' at 32amps rather than hardwiring for slightly faster....

The outlet gives you flexibility to run tools, or backfeed with generator in emergencies.

... pulling 32amps thru a plug should be fused/breakers at 50amps. Your (fused) disconnect wiring looks really old, and may be undersized to boot. Please have an electrician check, and pull new copper 6awg if needed.

Above is your best advice. Have someone qualified look at it and confirm you’re ok.

It’s 6 times faster than a L1 charger (120v)
If it’s 50 amp breaker, you can get a 40amp charger. There is no such thing as breaker amperage being too high for a device.
When you have a certain amp breaker, then the wire size of the circuit is large enough to handle the amperage up to 80% of the breaker’s amperage.

I have never seen a breaker like that. And it says 70amps on the label.

You need to replace those 70A fuses with 50s.
You should replace that receptacle with an industrial-duty one made by Hubbell/Bryant.

I agree with Dan on this. Those 2 wires coming out the bottom of that connection, (top picture) look smaller than #6 wire, like it should be. Call an electrician on this one.

I have heard of reliability issues with the Ford Portable, similar to other brands. Personally I keep that one in my trunk for road trips, and as use as a backup.

I bought a charger that plugs into my outlet in 2016, its been much easier to have a cable that never leaves my garage, and having a backup in my trunk. Check with your state and electric company, some have incentives for buying a charger, and some states having a smart charger can save you money.

I have used the portable that was included with my 2021 exclusively for 3 years, for both my car and my wife's for a total of 60,000 miles of charging so far... no problems

On the EVSE side, just select a charger that is certified, especially in Canada if you want a safety inspection cert on your home EV charging system (including the plug, wiring, grounding, other hardware) for insurance purposes, the master electricians will look for these on your charging devices like they did with me. 1 of 2 of my chargers are not certified in Canada so I ordered another one. Not worth any risks.

You don't say what the price is. I bought a grizzl-e on Amazon for $350 with a nice large cable (similar as your picture) for $350. it's been great for two years now.
Make sure your receptacle matches the plug on the cable.

Those are breakers from the 40's and 50's. My house was built in the 1950's and when I bought the house 12 years ago, it still had all those original breakers in them. Some of them had 100 amp fuses. They were very fragile, a simple touch would cause them to fall apart. I had to get them all pulled and new panel and new brakers installed and new wiring run for the whole house.

Thank you all for your knowledgable helpful information. I for sure will get an electrician to switch out that plug for an industrial-duty one made by Hubbell/Bryant and I think maybe buy a Grizzl-E cord. I am going to find out how much it would cost for the electrician to switch out that 1949 fuse box for a 50 amp breaker box. I hate changing those fuses!

Do you guys like the Grizzlies-E Classic Level 2 or do you prefer the Grizzlies-E Smart Level 2?

One other question, would you recommend getting a RWD or an AWD? We won't be in snow much, we're in Los Angeles.

This is all so new I am still trying to figure it out before we buy and your input really helps. Thank you!
