I can get it done for free from my friends shop. Thing is his closest location is 17 miles away from my house and since I retired I don’t drive past it twice a day like I used to.

It’s not convenient like it used to be to get it done.

I wanted to make sure that it was okay if I decided to do it.

Is it OK to do it? Yes. For almost every street-driven car it’s not worth doing, even for free. ?‍?

My Mach-E came with green valve stems. Which link at top of this thread says. " However, if your tires were filled with nitrogen (usually denoted by green valve-stem caps) and you’re low on pressure, don’t be afraid to bring up your psi with regular old air.". I thought it was just they were valve steam you just look to see green to see if pressure is right. So what do you think the green is for? Nitrogen or easy check valve stem.

It is nice to have this conversation rather than the similar one ICE drivers sometimes have, about whether one should buy premium gas for a car that doesn't spec it...

(Putting my physics hat on, I expect almost no effect that can be noticed from switching to pure N2, unless your "other" air supply isn't dry or is otherwise contaminated, as Consumer Reports more-or-less says.)

No, they claim it seeps out of the tire at a slower rate than straight air (a few independent tests do confirm this, though it's in the magnitude of 1-2psi/year difference).

Maintaining pressure at hot and cold temperatures would defy the laws of physics (specifically, the Ideal Gas Law)

N is heavier than O so cant you park in a way so the valve is at the 12:00 position therefore when you let out the air it is mostly O and not N?

If air worked that way, we could never breathe O.

I wouldn't drive 17 miles each way to do this.

And, as stated, unless he's purging what's in your tire already, there is zero benefit (and when it is filled with nitrogen, there's near zero benefit anyway).

I bought one of these at Harbor Freight and set a reminder in my phone's calendar to check the tires in both cars once each month. I could have gotten by with the 1 gallon version, which is currently on sale.

I have something similar, but NEVER use it anymore for tires.

They’re too heavy, loud, cumbersome and slow.

Once I got this portable lightweight battery powered one, I never use anything else for tires, pool floats etc.

You screw it on to the tire valve stem, choose the exact psi and hit the start button. Everything else is automatic.

Green valve stems indicate a nitrogen filled tire. I have seen valve stems that give you an indication if you're tire is full, but they tend to not work very well for a few reasons, a couple of them are:

- they are very cheaply made and they leak.
- different vehicles required different tire pressures but these valve stem caps tend to be sold as a generic item.

If you don't know how to tell the difference, almost certainly you do not have the inflation level showing valve stem caps, largely because they don't really work so dealers won't install them. The inflation level showing ones are usually physically much larger, and it's not the entire valve stem cap that's green, but rather a little green indicator on the end of it, they tend to look like these on Amazon (do not buy these, they are almost guaranteed to start leaking within a year or two, just check your tire pressure once every few months like a normal person):

You can test pretty easily though by unscrewing one of your valve stem caps, if it stays green, it's to indicate nitrogen, and is just about as useless as the other ones that I mentioned above.

Nitrogen tire fill always felt like bottled water to me. Creating a solution for something that isn't a problem.

However for OP: you can stop by your friends and get a full empty / nitrogen fill once and then just top up with regular air when needed with no issue. You'll still have mostly dry nitrogen so some of whatever benefit it would provide.
