I just got my notice to renew my NC registration and was surprised the $180 EV fee.
I get that gas taxes pay for the roads, but with the NC gas tax of 40.4 cents per gallon, but that’s the equivalent of almost 450 gallons of gas!
I happen to drive a pretty decent amount, but I bet a lot of EV owners don’t put 13,000 miles on a car every year.

Here are links to previous threads on the forum about this topic.

The first has Texas in the title but has input from members all across the country.

The second is specific to Virginia and lays out that state's approach -- flat fee on registration, or share telematics through the manufacturer or install an OBD device for tracking by third-party vendor to be charged for actual miles driven. Virginia bases its rate on the average mileage of all cars in Virginia (currently 11,600/year). Note that in Virginia even PHEVs pay this highway use fee since they achieve better than 25 mpg (so, all fuel-efficient and electric vehicles).

Texans could pay $200 annual fee to drive electric vehicles

That’s one thing I do not miss about North Carolina. Live there 30 years dealt with all their crazy stuff in the motor vehicle department. Try buying a 1940 car from somebody in New York that has a Vin number on it and only to get to North Carolina and that’s not the kind of number we like and it takes you six months plus you have to buy some type of insurance to get it registered on top of regular insurance. Fast forward moved to Mississippi no extra charge for an electrical vehicle and when you sell a car, you don’t need a notarized title to sign it right there.

Louisiana now charges $110 for an EV and $60 for hybrids per year. Oddly, it is meant to be paid when filing a tax return, not as part of auto registration or inspection. It can be paid directly to the state, for example when you realize that TurboTax can't deal with the form (as it is for many things in small states). Personally, I think the EV fee might be justified because of typical EV weight and presumed wear and tear on roads without paying gas taxes.

I view the hybrid tax as not justified, likely intended just to be mean.

NC also has a lower charge for plug-in hybrids ($90, I think), which at least seems in line with charging for full EV's, since many people can go months without having to fill up assuming they have a short commute. It does not apply to regular hybrids though (not plug-in).

Exactly my feelings. Instead of promoting EV's to help the environment they are punishing us. I drive about 6K/year so its the equivalent of a 15 MPG ICE vehicle.

I just got back from the Fulton County, GA tag office where I had to pay an extra $210 for driving an electric vehicle. Georgia is also moving to put an electricity tax on public chargers this year on top of the annual $210 fee. Their rational is they have to capture money from people driving across the state in electric vehicles and to bad for the locals who have to rely on public charging.

I live in NC an got well over 35K long distance miles on my '22 MME. I thought that fee was for out of state. Oh well!

GA has a $214 fee, which is equivalent to roughly the tax on 700 gallons of gas. I've never consumed even remotelyl that amount of gas in a year in my life. So it's not equitable. But I've got no problem with paying an EV fee, it'd be nice if they could make it more equitable but I'm not sure how easy that would be.

I agree some sort of fee makes sense.

One possible way is to pay based on charging, but that would likely require new standards to be written for communicating to servers and require all home charging to be smart chargers. That's unlikely to happen given the complexity but would be the most equitable. Public charging would just bake the cost in (so no more free charging).

Could also do the mileage-based approach, but I'm not a fan of that either. Though maybe a self-reported amount on state income tax rather than an in-vehicle tracker? Probably too many people will under-report so not viable.

Here in neighboring SC the fee is $120 for an EV and $60 for hybrid (annual) included in property tax/registration payment.

Your gas taxes are quite a bit lower than in NC, so I think that actually equates to more gallons of gas than here.

True. And our road conditions reflect it.
