Putting "Ground Speed" on the dash is stupid. What other kind of speed can a car have.? It is not an airplane.
You should turn your car back in, you don't deserve it... ;)

Two days into my new Mach-E and I'm continually blown away at just how amazing and marvelous she is. Ford really has pulled out all the stops to make this little rocket ship. Yesterday I noticed something new, what we used to call the speedometer.
I'm a private pilot and when flying an aircraft we use IAS, Indicated Air Speed. The Mach-E shows the speed as "Ground Speed". I love it!

I think all Mustangs have had this. Someone told me that when the original Mustang was introduced, some pictures were taken with P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft: really fast prop planes introduced late in WWII.

Perhaps homage is why it is there but the P-51 Mustang didn’t have a ground speed indicator either.

I don't recall seeing it on any Mustangs I've driven in the past.
My brother sent me photos of the OEM instrument cluster and replacement Cobra instrument cluster from his 1965 Fastback. Neither have anything saying "Ground Speed."
My sister's 1983 GT didn't have it.
Nor did her early 2000s GT.

I'm pretty sure it's a 2015+ thing and is not really a historical connection.

I mean, it's fun, no doubt...

In a Cessna 172 with the Garmin G1000 the big indicator shows airspeed that is based on air pressure differential. It also shows a small 'gs' (ground speed) that is derived from the GPS. Those two are different.
So in the MME ground speed would almost suggest it is derived from GPS as opposed to the wheels. It is not. Just a little fun.

The speed limit is derived from GPS and map data, not a camera that detects signs.

The camera is absolutely involved in detecting speed limit signs.

Notice that when you go in reverse it gives you mph. I wonder if it increases the odometer when driving in reverse?

As others mentioned, it's a throwback to the original Mustang which had "Ground Speed" in the indicator. And yep! Also named after the P-51 Mustang. Which, in turn, was named after the horse.

I think the Mustang logo should be a WWII fighter plane, which in turn has a horse on ITS wing ?
Lol
How about a mustang flying with the mustang horse on the wing with an electric cable going from the horses butt refueling the plane. ?? I always thought a horse with electrons coming out of its butt would look great on the side of my MachE

Thatā€˜s not correct.
The camera is absolutely involved in detecting speed limit signs.
I notice it change speed limits with no sign visible, and ignore signs that are there. So it seemed gps-based to me, just like in Apple or Google maps. But I could be wrong so I just tested it to be sure.

I put some tape on the front cameras to make them ā€˜blind’. Then went for a drive: The speed limit indicator works just like before. So it must be GPS based.

Let’s test this by putting tape on the front camera to make that blind.
It may also use the map database, but there’s no question that it uses the camera for speed sign recognition. It’s an advertised feature of the car.

The speed limit indicator works just as well with the cameras blocked. I just tried it.
So the text that the marketing dude wrote here is misleading: https://www.ford.com/support/how-to...sist-features/what-is-speed-sign-recognition/

It does not recognize speed signs. It reads the speed sign from the dashboard to adjust speed. That speed itself is GPS base from a database.
