If you can afford it, get the bigger battery. Peace of mind is worth it. Certainly over time more EA chargers will go in, but don't you want to travel with the car now?
According to the original post the Flagstaff trips will be in two years.

For her son's college, yes. Presumably she doesn't intend to stay home for the next 2 years?

Well, she ordered an SR so I assumed that met her needs until she considered the Flagstaff trips.
I virtually never take long road trips, hence my order of the SR battery. Perhaps her travel habits are similar.

I just got home from my first road trip in my standard range, rear wheel drive model. We went to Joshua Tree National Park and back.

One adult, three seniors... (One of those seniors is a small dog who appreciates humans that pick up his messes.) At the left edge of the photo, you can see a little bit of the ChargePoint station we stopped at in Chiriaco Summit. It worked fine by the way... The car's not in this shot because I moved it not long after it reached 80%, because it slows way down, there's a per-minute fee at this location, we weren't ready to leave yet, and I wanted to free up the space in case someone else would need it.

Although Flagstaff is much closer than Palm Springs, I think that for now, Flagstaff would be a tougher trip.

A Better Route Planner says you'd need to drive below the speed limit on the whole path from Anthem to Flag. Or you need to wait in Anthem for quite a long time, about an extra hour, in order to get the car from 80% to 100% filled. This is because the Mach-E charging slows way down to about 13 kW once the battery is 80% full.

EA is installing new chargers at a tremendous pace, and Ford may revise the charging curve... Either way, I think it's going to get better over the next several years.

Yesterday and today I visited an EA location that just opened in late April in Quartzsite. Yesterday the first stall was out of service (and you can see the electrician's truck who was servicing it in this first photo). Today it was in service and was working great. The vehicle was pulling about 113 kW of power for awhile before ramping down to about 90 and then about 55 or so, IIRC, as it got close to 80%. Then it dropped to 13 kW so I unplugged and left.

Plug and Charge worked flawlessly for me at every EA stop (4 of them over the two days). Interestingly, it was not going well for that Porsche Taycan owner in this first photo below. He has to call EA at every stop he makes to get them to activate the charger... And they have him try multiple stalls, etc. He is super upset with the experience.

I wasn't making a judgement of your choices, which I didn't know and isn't any of my business anyway since you didn't ask for my opinion. I'm a pessimist: not only is the glass half empty but the water is evaporating.

She asked for opinions and I gave mine. She doesn't have to take it.

I just did this trip and I have a rwd Ex range. From Glendale to Flag set cruise to 5 above speed limit so 70, 75 80 and 85 and got to Flag with 48% remaining and on way back (Down hill) got home with 56% remaining.

Nice! No stops at all on the way there or back? Are you starting from the part of Glendale that's near the northern stretch of Loop 101? Just trying to gauge whether I'd need to stop in Anthem.

This is promising... It could mean a summer time trip to Flagstaff in my standard range Mach-E would be no sweat.

Only downside to my trip was the 2 hour charge at Flag back to 100% but we when to Cracker Barrel and that helped. Charge to 80% was about 20 mins but from 80 to 100 was very slow! I started around Cactus and I-17. Go by the Nav., mine was very close to the final results and you should not need to stop at Anthem.

Yes, 80-100% is always at L2 rate. The good news is since you got home with 56% remaining, you could have just charged to 80%.

Plus, so many rest areas don’t have adequate power available to provide DC fast charging.

The charger in Camp Verde is L2 and it might help but we live in Buckeye and will take advantag of the top off at Anthem.

CA Rte 1 AWD & ext battery here. I've taken the trip twice from Phoenix to Williams (the family loves Bearizona). Two adults, two kids, overnight bags. First time got to Flagstaff and ended with about 26% going about 10 over. Second time had about 34% when we hit Flagstaff as I was staying at speed limit.

A little out of the way but if you're sight-seeing, EA has their new charging stations in Sedona at the edge of the park up there. Might be a good point to take a break and charge if you're taking the scenic route north.

We've done the trip to Flagstaff from south Chandler with an SR battery. We started with an 80% charge and stopped at the EA chargers at Walmart to top off back to 80%. Easily made it to the Flagstaff Walmart to recharge. Leaving Flag with an 80% charge, it was unnecessary to stop for charging on the trip home.

I live in Flagstaff; we both independently have meetings in Phoenix regularly, so we do the trip to and from Phoenix often.

I have CR-1 AWD ER, and have no problem skipping Anthem on the way up if I have about 50% or higher, even during storms but my partner insists that we charge up to 80% whenever we are traveling together.

If I'm alone and tired of sitting all day in my meetings, I will charge in Anthem just so I can stand/walk for 20-30 minutes.
