Yes. I love a beautiful car that functions as I expect it to.

Function: Have been driving plugins for 10 years now. I even had a C-Max Energi (I still think the C-Max is one of Ford's ugliest cars LOL).

Form follows function - if something works exceptionally well at doing what it is intended to do, it will be beautiful. If it is a terrible hassle to use, or performs poorly, or is all show no go, it'll be ugly.

At least, to my eye, and that's the only eye that counts for me, what with beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Which is better than being in the eye of a Beholder, since they can be mean.

Function. I have been modifying cars since the ‘70s. Always function. There are little dress-up items that are fine by me (like the hood bird on my T/A), but I ordered a GT-PE with a metal roof for a function that was more important to me than the 360 cameras’ function would have been. ?‍♂?

Of course, the base aesthetic needs to be pleasing to start with. ??
100%. I really wanted the metal roof to avoid having the extra weight up high, but the 360 camera, panoramic view, and spouse's preference outweighed what wouldn't have been that big of a difference anyway. I had a stealth Model 3 Performance (19" wheels, no spoiler or aero package) that was a plain Jane wrapper on a 0-60 in 3ish seconds monster. If it hadn't been available, I would never have gotten an M3.

I think BMW slapping M appearance kits on cars is a travesty, and AMG pitching a 4-banger is just plain wrong. A 2.3L Mustang is, well, not a real Mustang. We used to see an old Subaru in Boston with a paint tray riveted to the hood as a scoop and French drain pipes stuck to the side as exhausts- I have more respect for that driver than I do for anyone in 5 Series M Sport lie.

I adhere to the “form follows function” school. If something is well thought out, and designed with care, then beautiful form should flow naturally from the design. It may not be to everyone’s aesthetic, but that’s a different thing. I can see beauty in things I don’t like.

I had to think about this question for a while. The binary choice seems a bit harsh. But at the end of the day, I chose form because otherwise I would have bought a Tesla Model Y.

For me, the Tesla 3/Y was right out from a function standpoint. No instrument panel means less function for me. I could be persuaded into an S but I don’t like the price. ?‍♂?

When it comes to form, I don't think MME is particularly well designed. It looks good from the front, the proportions feel right, but the rear end kind of messed up. I would rather see it more boxy than having that sloping roof. I think id4 rear end look more attractive. The lip where the license plate is looks wrong. Also the proportions of the car don't feel right, the car should be a few inches wider. The wheels also look small, don't produce an impression of a muscular car.

(Denzel Voice) "My man!" yeah that accounts for my line of thinking as well. This thread has been interesting because of the high number of people who very much go function over form plus the thought process they went through in deciding. Pretty awesome. But yeah, I'm with you. If both cars are side by side, and the Tesla technically performs better (ie the Ford still works but the Tesla is just a bit more polished) I go Mach E 100% for looks alone, as (for me) I'd rather love the look of my car vs settle on look because it functions a bit better.

I HAVE TO STRESS - I'm not saying I'd take a dumpster fire of a car because of looks over a incredibly functioning but ugly car. Just stating form (again for me) definitely weighs a bit heavier on decision making than it obviously does for others. Thanks all for sharing your thoughts, this has been fun.

I picked function, but as a designer….
