When I started the later drive it stayed on at first. I wasn't paying attention after I shifted from R to D, so it could have gone off then or after the brief stop.

If the message stays off it may be a transient error.

Shut off the car, open the door, wait 5 minutes, and try again. If it goes away it's probably the gear shift glitch, not serious.

I had the same thing happening to me the other day and can confirm this procedure works, but in my case it took a few hours to get it moving again.

Yeah, don’t touch or fiddle with the gear shifter unless you have your foot on the brake first. You can ask for a GSM update in the TSB if you want it fixed.
