Recall work only to be done by selling dealer?

So this is a new one on me, and I haven’t read anything like this on the forums. I just (finally) tried to schedule the safety recall work at a dealer the Portland, OR area, but not the one I bought it from. The service guys just called me back and said they can’t do it, because the word from Ford Corporate is that the work had to be done by the dealer that sold the car to me.

The reason he gave is this is the “solution” for too many dealers refusing to do the recall work. Anyone else hear of this?

This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me for a few reasons (e.g. what if someone moves after buying the car and the selling dealer is further away?). I went to this dealer because I saw someone post they had a good experience with them on their recall. I actually don’t have any reason to think the dealer that sold me the car would do a bad job or might otherwise be inept, but they are just a little further away from me after my move (maybe 5 miles further in distance, but like 20 more minutes in terms of time with the roadwork going on).

Except for the initial service I've had all the work, including the recall, done at a different dealer than my purchase. Boggles the mind that they would decline $$$ from Ford, other than they don't need it? 🤔

Dealer is full of crap.

I bought in Iowa and had the recall work completed here in TN, no questions about where I purchased it.

One other thing I’ll add to this thread is he sort of made it sound like a recent development. That said, and giving the benefit of the doubt, I’m sure his response would have been different if I’d said my dealer was somewhere that wasn’t just 5-6 miles away.

What recall are you trying to schedule?

I know any open recall can be done and any Ford dealer in the US (assuming it is a car originally sold in the US), and I would be surprised if a dealer could actually refuse to perform an open factory recall.

What dealer did you try to schedule with? Landmark Ford is one of the biggest in the Portland area, but they do tend to get booked up well in advance even with their 6 am to midnight service hours.

I would either check with another dealer or if that is not convenient I would open a case with Ford. I am sure they will be able to get the car into a local dealer for you.

They’re still lying. The good part about that is you probably don’t want to take the car there now. What else are they going to lie about?

That's illegal, period. That 'rule' would,in effect, hold you hostage and unable to move to another state or across the country.

I was talking to Landmark because someone has posted a favorable impression for having them do the recall work (this is for the roof and windshield).

I have a feeling they just do not want to do the recall work since that recall is a lot of work and has a high likelihood of damage/complications. That being said, I would probably open a case up with Ford and ask them for their assistance getting this recall completed.

I promise you that these recalls are not money makers for the dealers.

I also called Landmark. The service tech said that they are prioritizing their customers first. I understood that and appreciated his honesty. I am on their list for the recall (expected in Sept??). The main issue I have is that the smaller dealers will not have the experience to perform one recall every month or so.

Yeah, but “prioritizing” is different than telling me to go elsewhere altogether.
