Soon after I bought a Mach-E in May 2021, I had an electrician install a 240-volt, NEMA 14-50 outlet in our garage. In addition to charging the Mach-E using the Ford Mobile Charger that came with the car, we also use it to charge my wife's Ford Fusion Energi (a plug-in hybrid) much faster (think an hour or two versus overnight).

Unfortunately, a few months ago my wife dropped the mobile charger and the little black part that operates the locking mechanism broke. We've been using it since then and it has been working fine, but today it was locked into my wife's car and we couldn't get it out. I unplugged the charger from the outlet—I'm no dummy...okay, only a little bit of a dummy—and used a flat screwdriver to pop off the aforementioned little black part. We were then able to remove the charger.

At this point, I'm hesitant to try using it again, so does anyone know the best way to get a replacement? I was not able to find the part on Ford's parts website, which is hardly the model of a user-friendly UI, and I assume that it would be ludicrously overpriced anyway. (I haven't talked to my dealer yet.)

Are there any places that sell legitimate Ford parts at a discount from MSRP? (When I had a Honda, it was easy to get Honda parts for less from a Honda dealership that would ship them.)

If not, are there any good mobile chargers not made by Ford? Since we already have the 240-volt, NEMA 14-50 outlet, I don't need the full EVSE solution, just the mobile charger.

Thanks!

The part number for the mobile EVSE (the brick itself with its attached, long charge cable and coupler) is LJ9Z-10B706, or sometimes listed with its part revision # at the end, like LJ9Z-10B706-F. You could Bing or Google that to find dealers that sell online for a discount compared to local dealer parts departments.

Some people use Grizzl-E as an alternative.

A lot of people buy less expensive mobile EVSEs from Amazon or Costco, like Mustart or AxFast for example, but be aware that nearly none of them are UL Listed or Intertek tested for fire safety.

Edited to add:

If you want the full kit with the zipper bag, wall mount bracket, and 120V/240V connectors, it's part number LJ9Z- 10C830.

This is a known weakness of the Ford handle. Superglue is honestly your best bet. They don’t sell just the trigger part. And Ford won’t warranty it since you broke it from dropping.

You could also buy a replacement J1772 handle, but you would need some wiring experience to replace it.

I found the part at a couple of Ford dealerships that sell online, and to be fair, it doesn’t seem to be overpriced at all. It’s right in the middle of the price range of similar devices—higher than the non-UL-listed ones but lower than UL listed ones like the Shell device (which seems really expensive at $500 for the 40A version and only slightly less for the 32A)

Thanks everyone!

I’d never buy that charger out of pocket instead of the alternatives like GrizzlE or a juice box

Yes I was thinking about doing that but glad I got the GrizzlE instead! The flaky FMC is back in the car but still works in case I ever need to use it again.
Yeah I’ve never hooked mine up but it’s in the trunk just in case

I'm on the fence about getting a charger other than the OEM that comes with the car. I figure that it's covered under warranty so why not use it?

We've been using my wife's Volt OEM charger for 6+ years now and the Tesla's for 15 mo w/o any issues.

Going on a trip? We'd just put it in its bag (if it comes with one) and toss it in one of the storage areas.

For my wife's Mach-E, that just left KC on a train, I went the route of the Emporia charger. I know I could have used the pretty pricey adapter on my Tesla Charger but I figured for a little bit more money we could each have a dedicated charger and charge at the same time.

My Tesla at 48A and my wife at 40A with the Emporia. If we come to find out she really needs the extra 8A we have the option to hard wire the Emporia and get the full 48A.

Just wanted to throw this option out there as a replacement.

I’ve been using the FMC daily that came with my Premium I bought in July last year. Didn’t include it with the car when I traded it in for the GTPE. The GTPE one is still brand new in my trunk.

This summer, I was definitely getting throttled with the heat but even going so far low as 40%, it would still get to 90% by 7am the next day. I did drive down to around 20% once and had hard throttling that day so it didn’t get to 90% until a little after 8am.

Now that it’s cooler, it went back to normal and gets to 90%, from 65%/70%, by 11pm/midnight everyday (charging starts at 9pm). So it’s at least assured me that the throttling does protect it from damage and it’ll restore to normal performance once it gets cooler.

I've never had a problem with the Ford mobile charger, other than the fact that my wife dropped it on the hard concrete floor of our garage. And even after that it continues to work; even after I completely pried off the clip part in order to get it to unlock from my wife's car as noted in the OP, it *still* continues to work.

Also, I already had the 240V outlet installed by an electrician when I got the car, for quite a bit of coin, so I don't feel the need for anything more than a mobile charger.

OTOH, the Shell mobile charger currently has "coupons" available at Amazon—$70 off the 40A and $120 off the 32A. Both end up at very reasonable prices compared to anything else, and the reviews are good, so with the 32A being $100 less after coupon and me not needing the only slightly faster 40A charging, I've ordered the Shell 32A mobile charger. It even comes with a converter for regular 120V outlets, just like the Ford mobile charger does.

Looking the charger up on Amazon I saw this review:
"My biggest bone to pick is the lack of safety certification. Sky Intelligent states in the Q&A that it is "both FCC and UL certified." I see the FCC certification in the instruction manual, but there is no UL label on the charger or manual. I did see a UL label on the plug. I think that's only for the plug itself. Other chargers I've used prominently display their certifications from UL or another agency on the charger if they have it. None to be found on the Shell Recharge."

GM OEM level 1 - using it for 5 years; have another stored in the Bolt (use it most of the time for both EVs now)
Clipper Creek EVSE for five years as well (use it infrequently now) - no software nonsense, just EVSE
Not cool, I am aware. BUT THEY WORK
they both work, never a problem to date.
Used Ford level 1 once- tripped the breaker almost immediately -same breaker I (continue to)use for GM level 1 - (Ford level 1)been stored in car since
