Given the steady decline in used car values, wondering if we should get rid of Model Y sooner than later. Got some quotes yesterday, a little shocked at how low they are in comparison to a year ago when we upgraded from a '21 MYLR to a '22 MYLR with 3rd row. That transaction was a wash and we got to drive the '21 for free for a year.

Have a scheduled build week of 11/21 for a GT - holding steady so far. Thinking delivery end of Dec./early Jan. if nothing slips. But.... My Raptor was delayed several months and it happened to me on a prior Raptor and a Mustang. So my confidence with Ford isn't that high in meeting their estimated build/delivery times. Seems like a mixed bag on the weekly build threads here.

I'm waiting on a dealer trade in number, which if good and they hold it until delivery of the Mach E then easy decision. But... I don't think it'll be that great and an outright sale is likely best.

We don't drive a ton and my wife and I can drive my Raptor until the Mach E shows up, but I wouldn't want to be in that position for many months...

Curious what you would do.....

Since you’re considering the private sale route, list it at a number on the high end of what you expect. You can wait for an offer that meets your expectations since you don’t need to sell immediately. If that offer doesn’t come, then you’ll have a better idea of what your car is actually worth in the current market conditions. Kind of a win-win for you if you’re willing to deal with the hassle of a private sale. I’ve gone that route before and it’s quite a pain.

One minor factor on trade-in vs private sale is sales tax. It's different for different sates. Some tax on the full value of the car while others subtract the value of the trade-in to get the taxable amount.

As mentioned, how long would you be willing to wait in case there's a delay? How much of a hinderance would a single car be? Would the cost of a rental be more than the increased sale price?

If you can go for months without that vehicle, then fine. But if there is even the slightest hesitation about your ability to cope without the additional set of wheels for up to 6 months don't do it. Ford's logistics is currently underwater, with dozens of vehicles stuck at one railyard or another seemingly at random.

Could your MME arrive on time? Sure, but it could just as easily sit in KC for multiple months without a reason or get well date.

Do you trust your dealer to not add an after delivery ADM?

I wasn't thinking private sale to an individual, but to a Vroom type. Agree with you on what a pain is it is for a sale to an individual, been there and done that in the past, no thanks!

The voice of wisdom here. I would not want to go that long with one vehicle. Since Ford has put me in this situation three times in six years, I must be crazy even considering selling early! The good news was that I had a locked in dealer trade figure and they absorbed the additional miles, so I drove for free essentially...

100% agree. With an 8% sales tax rate here, I usually do trade in to the dealer. Tesla's offer last year was insulting. We'll see what the dealer here quotes and if they will lock that number in until the MachE actually comes in.

I'm sure they would let me trade in ahead of delivery of the MachE, but that doesn't help me.

EV sales haven’t softened but dealership sales overall have. The added bonus is dealers over paid for used cars and are sitting on a financial time-bomb. The online dealers like vroom are quickly going under water so they are going to low ball every time. We are also going into the historically slow sales period (Nov-Jan) when buyers normally get better deals. It’s NOT a sellers market right now.
Plus the above notes with delayed shipments even if the cars get built on time. I would hold on the your Tesla and wait for the market to rebound.

I wonder how many states around the country do what we do here in AR? Here, we can sell a used car up to 60 days before or after the purchase of a different car, and still get the sales tax credit. You may have to pay it up front, but you can send in a couple of forms to the state DMV and get a refund in 4-6 weeks. Maybe that's a silver lining for living in an otherwise backward, redneck, EV-unfriendly environment.
