Anyone besides me not like this trend of no spare or donut spare, and no run flats? My dealer says he can get me an 18 inch steel rim and cheap tire for $250 but can't guarantee it will fit over my GT calipers. An oem rim lists for $900 and he will sell it to me for $800! Lol, without a tire! Tire rack has no info or available rims for the GT yet.
Anyone who has switched out wheels want to sell one of your originals? I'm in NH

I don’t like the trend in theory.

Then again I’m 41 and have never had to use a spare tire.

So if you do get a full size spare, where will you store it?

Buy it from your independent tire dealer and have them store it without a rim. This is what they do for customer’s snow tires in the cold states. Tire Rack gives better prices but not the necessary emergency service.

Spare tires are heavy and expensive. They decrease gas milage in ICE cars and range in EVs. If auto companies don’t include them then their cars get better EPA numbers and these goals are being forced upon them.
While some of us have grown up with full sized spares, most of us have never used them. I have, but I know most of my cohorts have not. Now consider how many drivers these days are even capable of changing a tire on their own. Most use AAA or some other roadside assistance. It all adds up to spares aren’t really a thing anymore. I’m getting winter wheels and tires for the wife’s car. So no matter the season we’ll have a complete set of tires sitting around the garage. If one of us blows a tire, the other one of us can bring a spare from home. A little inconvenient to wait around for the spare to be delivered, but overall probably better than waiting on AAA and certainly better than carrying around 50-60 lbs of unnecessary weight everywhere and having it take up my whole rear cargo area.
If you opt to get a spare and carry it with you, don’t forget a jack and a tire iron. The Mach-E doesn’t have those either.

This is just my opinion. Nothing more. Does 50 pounds really mean that much to carry around? What if your fat vs skinny. Say your on a long range road trip. You get a flat a hundred miles from home. Kinda tough getting that spare tire at home than. I guess I am just old school. Been driveing 50 years. Yes, I can change a flat. Its funny though, my 2 sons cant, not interested. And after all the Harleys and cars I have been through in my lifetime. Tried passing things on to them. NO INTEREST. sorry to ramble. I get your point. Thanks.

Either in the trunk or bag it and seat belt it in the back seat

50 lbs probably doesn’t make much of a difference. But that’s where we’ve gotten down to in the process. Every ounce helps add up.
If I’m 50 miles from home, my wife could be there in about an hour. Two if she was out and about. Still might be less time than AAA. If we were going really far, 1000 miles, maybe then we opt to bring a spare with us.

The car comes with free roadside assistance including towing for 5 years. Vehicle includes compressor that will inject sealing foam. Too many don't read the manual and then read the kit.

Our 2018 Fusion Energi had no spare either. Wife had a rear blowout when she hit a pothole at 70mph. Ford towed her to dealer, new rim and tire. They matched Discount Tire on tire without our asking. Rim was list price, they took off 5%. Wouldn't do their internet price because I wasn't in town to order it, buy it, and then install it.

By the way, hitting a pothole and blowing out is a coverable collision event. "Collision with road". Deductible applies, and you may lose a claim-free discount. We already had that lost, so we only lost 1 more year on the 3 year lost discount. Made a claim to the state, and they ended up paying the deductible (they require you make a claim). ~$925 for rim and tire. Cost to us was 1 year lost discount, i.e. ~$50.

Main issue with Mach-E was that this tire wasn't available for retail sale until recently.

Weight of tire and rim would be closer to 60 pounds. Yes, weight matters. My father in-law used to drive around with the kitchen sink loaded in the trunk of his Mercury Marquis. Got like 12mpg.

And this "trend" is many years old.

I am an impatient person. I hate waiting for the tow truck and missing whatever event I was on the way to. I can change a tire in 15 minutes or less (not quite as fast as in "A Christmas Story") an then I can figure out what to do about a repair or replacement later. Instead of my car sitting at the tire place, unable to be driven, while they order the tire I need. What a PIA. Sure changing a tire is a PIA but a much smaller PIA, I think.

AND with the COVID rules, most tow truck companies say you cannot ride in the cab with the driver, unless the driver allows it. So you are literally stranded alone, on the side of the road, while they take your car away. This happened to me in the middle of nowhere in NC, with no Uber or taxi service available, and 4 hours from home. Luckily the tow truck driver wasn't worried about COVID, so we were not stranded. He even drove us all the way home to VA. (He got a big tip out of it.)

The lack of spare tires in new cars is a frustrating trend, but I would probably design them the same way for the same reasons described by @Murse-In-Airy. Oh well. Some things get better, some things get worse. Lack of a spare tire is definitely worse IMO.

Don’t put it in the back without securing it! It could be deadly in a car accident.

I still don’t quite understand what you are planning on doing. Storing it at home until you need it and having someone bring it to you if you get a flat?

Or are you going to drive around all the time with the spare taking up all that space?

I’m just trying to understand the need where this would actually be convenient.

Pretty much the only time this would save you is if you had major sidewall damage, in town, and someone was around that could drive that spare to you. And what do you save? A little bit of time in that unlikely to happen more than once in a decade situation.

Around town is not an issue, but having a spare when on a road trip would be nice. Leave it in the garage, unless you are going on a trip.

Modern Spare is developing a 19" wheel. I'm on thier list to try it out. Now, can Ford get me my car before Modern Spare has their wheel? Inquiring minds want to know.

I agree with the OP. He wants a spare and as someone who doesn't live in a city (20 minutes @ 55 from a grocery store) I can say I wish I had one too.

My last EV hit a pothole 5 miles from home, blew the tire and I had to wait 3 hours for a tow when it was 110 out. No fix a flat kit can help with a blow out and our roads are dog cr@p. We aren't all City dwellers with a tow waiting around the corner. We can swap a flat faster that your hold time with roadside.

Thanks general for that link.
