That's really weird. I've never had a salesperson care if I had the VIN number to a factory order. There are loads of dealerships that list the VIN to any car they list online. With used-car sales, buyers *insist* on having the VIN so they can look up the service history (e.g. CarFax).

The VIN is 17 digits long. Only the last handful of digits are unique, the rest are based on the specific vehicle model & features.

The tricky bit is digit 9 ... that's a check-digit which is calculated based on the values of the other 16 digits. Here's how that works:

Divide by 11: 411/11 = 37 4/11.
The remainder is 4; this is the check digit to be inserted in position nine (9) of the VIN.
(d) The fourth section shall consist of eight characters, which occupy positions ten through seventeen (10-17) of the VIN. The last five (5) characters of this section shall be numeric for passenger cars and for multipurpose passenger vehicles and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 4536 kg. (10,000 lbs.) or less, and the last four (4) characters shall be numeric for all other vehicles.
You can find this here: https://ecfr.io/Title-49/Section-565.25

To translate each digit of VIN into an "Assigned Value" is only moderately tricky.
  1. If the digit in that position is a number, then the Assigned Value is simply that very same number (e.g. 1=1, 2=2, etc.)
  2. If the position has an alpha character instead of a number ... it's a bit trickier. While it somewhat follows the alphabet ... where A=1, B=2, C=3, etc. there are a couple of nuances. Look at TABLE X in the linked article. It's really easiest to just refer to the table. This is because they don't just map A-Z as 1-26... they don't allow double-digit numbers (no letter maps to a number greater than 9). Also... they skip the letters I, O, and Q which are never used in a VIN. But they do awkward things when they skip these letters (sometimes they skip the corresponding number ... sometimes they don't).
    1. The first 8 letters of the alphabet translate to numbers 1-8
    2. I is the 10th letter of the alphabet ... but they don't use I (to avoid confusion with 1)
    3. The next nine letters (J-R) map to 1 through 9 again (but note that O and Q are missing ... but so are the numbers they would map into ... so this isn't a problem.)
    4. They reset the count at S again (as you would expect) EXCEPT just to make it more fun, they start counting at 2 (instead of 1).
  3. If you were trying to write a translate function for a computer program, the rules would be complicated enough that it's probably easier to create a translation table to lookup the value.
Once all letters are converted into numeric values, they can be multiplied by the "Weight Factor" to find the result.

Add all the results.

Divide by 11 but what you REALLY want is the Remainder (modulus).

E.g. on my VIN, the numbers add up to 322. 322 Ă· 11 = 29.2727... but the Modulus of 322 Ă· 11 = 3 ... so 3 is the check-digit in position 9 of my VIN.

What's weird? The VINs are not directly correlated to the vehicle production sequence. So you cannot expect them to line up perfectly.

i know that but 5000 VIN's difference in produciton sequence? for what's i've heard in NL is that the First Editions have a higher VIN and are producted later then my Select with low VIN.
