Sunglasses holder broken hinge for holding closed

Sunglasses holder wouldn't open. Pressing on it to open just wouldn't work. Think I pulled on it and it broke the hinge that keeps it closed. I had sunglasses inside.

1. Why did this happen?
2. Is this a warranty issue?
3. If dealership will charge me for repair, can somebody give me a link to purchase this part and just replace it manually?

Should be covered under warranty, 36 months bumper to bumper

The dealer should fix it under warranty. Better to be stuck closed then stuck open. In the meantime, put the sunglasses in the slot under the console.

As others have said, this should be a warranty item. As far a purchasing the part, overhead consoles are sold as one complete unit (minus the alarm motion sensors). You cannot just buy the sunglasses door, hinges, catch, etc. They are also not cheap, around $550 or so for the one in the Mach-E.

I use mine daily - I’ve had the sunglasses rotate/shift inside more than once to prevent me from pressing the door to open.

This has happened on other cars for me as well.

My solution is to firmly tap/hit the door to dislodge the glasses inside that are preventing the door from unlatching. Don’t just pull it open - if you can avoid it.

I had the same problem with an earlier vehicle (not MME), when our sunglasses are a little big or of a shape that is prone to getting stuck inside the groves etc. it will not open because it is stuck somewhere inside. When we try to force open, it will break the hinge. The only way is to replace the whole unit including the light switches etc., that is the entire set not just the open/close area.
