Requirement by safety regulators that there has to be a physical button for max defrost.
Not in the US. As far as I know, China is the only country that requires a physical max defrost button. I know both Tesla and Rivian do not have physical max defrost buttons and their might be others.

We’re having a debate over this in another thread. While the regulations don’t specifically require a physical button, it appears that in order to comply with FMVSS 103, a physical button appears to be the easiest way for manufacturers to do so.

Not sure if it’s regulated here in EU, but at least in Norway we have a max defrost button too, down with out left leg (where brightness buttons are). Maybe it’s US marked not having it?

That is correct. The requirement is a set time until defrosted so if you only have a software button and your software takes a little long to boot or your screen doesn't turn on, it's an automatic recall.

Maybe the reason Tesla and Rivian don't have a physical MAX defrost button is because their screen's are already on by the time you sit in the drivers seat and the HVAC controls are instantly available. Maybe their screens not turning on at all is something that rarely or never happens so they aren't worried about it?

I personally, have never used the defrost setting let alone the MAX defrost setting in the last 5+ years in any of my Mach-E's. The HVAC is always set to Auto (72˚) and the car does a great job of keeping the interior temperature comfortable and the windows clear. I replaced the physical Max Defrost button on all three Mach-E's with a liftgate button which I use almost on a daily basis.

My Cadillac does not have a max defrost button, only touch screen.

I can't turn off the HVAC without opening a menu. I can't turn off dual control without opening the slow menu. Which btw, futzing with HVAC controls is technically distracted driving in Michigan. IF you get in an accident turning off the HVAC while you wait for the menu to pop up you'll be liable).
I turn off the HVAC (which also turns off dual temp controls) without opening a menu. Push the fan button and give the control knob a spin to the left. Two seconds and done.

The set time is 40 minutes per 103...
Sample test with outlines at 5 minute intervals
Ford Mustang Mach-E SYNC-26.2.8.3 (the big SYNC update) 1785017964824-xv

Pass/Fail areas with required minimums to pass at a specific point in time
Ford Mustang Mach-E SYNC-26.2.8.3 (the big SYNC update) 1785018238701-6z

BTW, this was on a Rabbit with manual controls. It beat test minimums (which are still the same) with 20 minutes to spare...

Bottom line: if a car can meet or beat the minimums at 20, 25, and 40 minutes it passes, even if it does little or nothing in the preceding minutes.

If your software takes too long to pop up a max defrost button and that makes it so you can't meet the defrost metrics of 20 and 40 minutes then you have much larger problems.

Again, the expedition doesn't have a physical defrost button and so don't many other cars.

People, stop excusing Ford for either crappily slow software or dumb design. There's no good reason to duplicate a button like this. Fix your software or fix your car design. Seems like they did in the Expedition but I'm guessing everyone there will now complain they don't have double max defrost buttons, right? That's how the logic in this thread works.

I got this update about a week ago, with the 2 smaller updates in early July. Perhaps coincidentally, my car has stayed in Whisper mode since sometime after the second update. This is, by far, the longest the car has stayed in Whisper mode for me.

I feel for you people who live in places it gets cold enough to need "Max Defrost." I assume it works on my car, but I don't know.
