Tesla charge adapter

I bought one on Amazon as there are none to be found on Fords site or local dealers in Canada nor do they offer a free one. Question is since there is no way to register this adapter I cannot see any chargers on the blue oval network. Do I need to download the Tesla app to be able to use the network?

I use the Tesla app. Make sure you use sites that are open to “non Teslas”. I also join for a month if I’m traveling and save some $. I turn off “plug & charge” and initiate the charge from the Tesla app. Do a test charge before you take a trip just to make sure it works.

Which adapter did you buy? Be aware that many on Amazon will only work on Tesla slow chargers (level 2) and will not work on highway fast Tesla superchargers.

There is no need to “register the adapter” anywhere.

Not sure if it’s any different in Canada, but just open your Ford app, goto the charging tab, hit the big “find public charging” button.

Then go into filters on the top left, expand the advanced section at the bottom and make sure this box UN-checked. And it should show compatible Tesla Supercharger locations.

Not all Tesla Superchargers are open to other EVs, so if it doesn’t show up then it won’t work even with an adapter.

You also do not necessarily need the Tesla app, but if you use them often (like more than twice a month) it will be beneficial to use the Tesla app and sign up for the monthly charging subscription for lower rates.

If you are using the subscription, make sure you activate the charger in the Tesla app before plugging the car in so that you get charged the subscription rates instead of the regular rates through Blue Oval plug and charge.

This is SO important. Make sure you get a NACS DC to CCS1 adapter if you want to use Superchargers. This one is from Canada (A2Z EV), free shipping to U.S. or Canada, will be 25% off on Black Friday, and has a great reputation on the forum.

If you instead got a NACS to J1772 AC Level 2 adapter, keep it for use at Tesla "Destination chargers" like you would find at hotels, garages, and restaurants. You can usually find the charging stations in the PlugShare app.

You will want to use the Tesla app for accurate pricing and to determine which Superchargers are compatible with using an adapter.

The one you bought from Azon looks good for supercharging. Consider getting a Tesla destination AC adapter, too. Black Friday deal on this one from A2Z will be outstanding. (BTW, I have no connection to A2Z, just am a big fan.)

I meant that the one referenced in his post looks good for supercharging, but that he should also consider a destination adapter. I'll try to edit for clarity. Thx.

I didn't see anyone say this clearly. Admittadly i didn't scroll to the end.

There are two adapters. One for ac, one for dc. There is no single adapter that does both (can't be, the way the standard works).

Ac is level 2, 240v, 3 kw to about 9 kw, aka destination charger but also if you went to a friend's house who had a Tesla charger.

Dc is level 3, 30kw to about 170kw (where our maches max out, chargers go higher), supercharger adapters (which the listing clearly is)

Hopefully that's clear!

Now ..... There have been reports of shady poorly manufactured dangerous supercharger adapters on amazon (i know! Fakes on amazon???) The amp and volt levels are really high. A2z and lectron, and the oem brands (which are manufactured by tesla and lectron by ford, idk about others), are known good. You would also expect a rivian bwm, gm, hyndai etc dealer to have parts available.

I would be cautious about any supplier other than those. The damage a bad adapter can do is high. An ac adapter is much lower volts and amps, but not the supercharger adapter.

A2z is a Canada company. I have one of their adapters. I would be shocked if they couldn't get you one of their fine adapters very quickly.

Although it looks like you bought the correct adapter (CCS1 on the link), there is no mention of UL or CSA certification, which means it has not been tested for the power they claim on the link. It is not a known brand and certainly NOT #1 in Canada.

This is important. Use caution until it proves itself (or keep it as an emergency backup and use the A2Z adapter). Not to say it won't work, but failure will be expensive.
