I’m planning our first extended roadtrip for next month. I already have an A2Z Typhoon adapter which I’ve used at Tesla Superchargers; NACS to CCS1.

Some hotels might have Tesla destination chargers. A2Z tells me I also need to buy a NACS to J1772 charger for the destination chargers.

Does this sound right? Why can’t I use the Typhoon even though the destination charger is less powerful and only provides J1772 power instead of CCS1? The Mach E accepts both formats

thanks

Yes, that's right.

The Mach-E uses two sets of pins. One for AC charging and another set for DC charging. The DCFC adapters typically don't have the AC charging pins.

The free Tesla adapter you received is for DC Level 3 fast charging.

You can't use your DCFC level 3 adapter on a Tesla AC level 2 charger.

For this you will need a Level 2 AC adapter which is very useful adapter for non-Tesla EV.

Lots of folks use a NACS Level 2 charger / Tesla destination chargers and pair it with an adapter to use it on their vehicle with J-1772 plug. This adapter works on Tesla home chargers and Tesla Destination chargers which are commonly found at shopping centers, grocery stores and Airbnb.

You can use the same Tesla Find Us link to locate Tesla Level 2 destination chargers.

The only three brands / model I would buy is A2Z Stellar, UMC TeslaTap or Lectron J-1772

I personally bought the 48 amp Lectron and gave it away to a forum member and prefer to use the 80 amp A2Z Stellar with built in lock and compact design.

I am currently using the A2Z Stellar NACS to J-1772 adapter which is available for $92, compact build, has a built in lock, good customer service / warranty and overbuilt for futureproofing.

Discount promo code “FORD” is still working and free shipping is also available.
