When is this supposed to happen to US Tesla chargers? And how would we know which ones are open? Do we have to install the Tesla app or would our Ford nav app, pick it up?

I heard they started in Europe. WHY? Really?

Because in Europe, all EVs have the same charging connector by law. No new cables or adapters required.
And the opening is only for the lesser used SCs. Tesla has not fully opened up SCs anywhere.

Multiple threads on this.

No date exists. White House leaked it out there, Tesla didn't say boo.

It won't happen until Tesla does what's necessary to conform to requirements to tap into $7.5B. You can bet this will include ironclad guarantees, so that a certain unpredictable / irrational CEO can't renege on something and have taken taxpayer money.

IMO, this won't happen in the US for a long time.

Maquis, I would love that. Consumers deciding the best options or standards works great for toys, clothes and digital formats, but not for things that really matter, like EV charging standards, building structure safety, electrical standards, etc.
Maquis, where in Illinois are you? I'm downstate between Bloomington and Peoria.

In the US case, Elon came along before we really had a standard established, so he did his own thing. Even though everyone else now uses J1772/CCS combo, it’s not mandated.

I‘m in Adams county, right on the Mississippi.

This video explains a few good reasons why the NACS exists (Tesla), why it won't likely open up anytime soon, or might not matter if it does. More cons than pros, other than Tesla's attempt at gov't cash grab.

Hint: Elon Musk says a lot of things are going to happen that actually don't. One might say he likes attention.

Not gonna happen anytime soon, unless he gets a sweetheart deal that gives him a sizable chunk of the $7.5B.

Hmm, in addition to the potential cash grab of part of the 7.5 B, I would think Tesla would want to market adapters for their super chargers, charge a higher rate for non Tesla EVs and viola, another cash revenue...

I wouldn't mind paying a little bit more for that opportunity as it opens up a lot more for us.

If you look at Tesla prices overseas though they have typically tried to undercut the competition. They are already at 75% or greater load here in the states, so they don’t really have much more revenue to capture. If they reach a point where SpC load falls below 50% then I’d agree that revenue capture is there, but at the moment they’re near maximized, and they are closed. If they raise the prices such that they exceed, for example, $/kWh at EA, then that i bad publicity for them. So I don’t see that happening.

Melon Husk ain't doin nothin unless he's forced to or it's something that allows Tesla to further cement itself as the premier EV brand. It's a walled garden for a reason, and without stronger regulatory teeth, it won't happen.
