In planning trips both east and west from the Kansas City area, I find the ChargePoint/ EA/ EVgo network as robust and available as the Tesla network. They both take a little planning but trips are easily done on either system. When both are available to everyone it will certainly increase your options and peace of mind, but we have had no problems traveling in our Mach-e and have never had reliability issues with any charging network. It does seem inevitable that these systems will at some point combine, as to whose plug wins, meh!
