Consumer Reports proved that a Tesla will drive with nobody behind the wheel following fatal crash
Well, that satisfies me as to who or what was pressing down on the accelerator pedal.

The Tesla was.

Now, tell me about Tesla's explanation of why uncontrolled battery fires are so rare.
From a Tesla press release.

Because of their strength, Tesla’s battery packs rarely incur serious damage in accidents. And, in the extremely unlikely event that a fire occurs, the state-of-the-art design of our battery packs ensures that its safety system works as intended and isolates a fire to select areas within the battery while simultaneously venting heat away from the passenger cabin and the vehicle.

CR proved it is fairly easy to trick the Autopilot that there is a driver in the seat - just keep the seatbelt fastened, put a weight on the wheel, and switch seats without opening a door - but there are still several unknowns.

1. Supposedly Autopilot doesn’t work on non-striped roads. It shouldn’t have engaged on that residential street. But some say maybe it can?

2. How did the Autopilot get the car moving fast enough to crash it with sufficient force over such a short distance (about 100yds)?

My wild speculation is that the owner in the back, asked his guest in the passenger seat to add some throttle and the guest applied way too much.

yep, more to come out Monday about this. This is going to be a big PR hit, but how many will roll their eyes and go oh well Elon is a god.
His SNL hosting gig (that I won't be watching) should be exceedingly awkward now.

Actually, it may cause blowback to the whole AD effort - even the companies acting responsibly

here's the actual quote. Unlikely TACC nor AP was engaged.
" In that vein, we did a study with them over the past week to understand what happened in that particular crash. And what we've learned from that effort was that Autosteer did not and could not engage on the road condition that -- as it was designed. Our adaptive cruise control only engage when a driver was buckled in about 5 miles per hour. And it only accelerated to 30 miles per hour with the distance before the car crashed. "

CNN, poor journalism.
