Already a happy owner of a '21 Job 1 and will drive it until the wheels fall off.

The other car in the household is ICE, getting close to 100k in mileage, and will be a PITA to repair as it ages.

It's been nice to have the ICE as an option for the 1-2 odd destinations where the charging infrastructure is questionable. However, with gas prices going up, and 99% of the driving performed with the ICE vehicle not requiring much more than at-home charging, we're thinking about replacing the ICE vehicle with an EV.

Question: For those who have > 1 EV in your household, do you have more than one L2 charger?

On paper, I think we can get by with just one charger, though winter would be potentially challenging (despite what my profile says, I'm in a colder part of the country during winter.)

I have plenty of headroom (physical as well as amperage) for an additional electrical run but was not sure it was really needed since I only really need to charge 1-3x/week.

Thank you!
I replaced my Chargepoint Home Flex with a Grizzl-e Duo so I can charge both EVs starting at 11pm. I have Super Off Peak rates that start at 11pm. I can alternate the charging every other day without a problem, however, in the winter I prefer to have a departure time to warm up the batterie & cabin from the house current every day.

I have dual EVs and tried a few different setups over 3.5 years.
  • Initially, I had a shared EVSE (Grizzl-E Smart) and found it a bit awkward. I had to swap between the EVs sometimes to get what we needed and I didn't like the hassle. Yes, it was doable, but not ideal - especially if you forget to swap the cable.
  • I then moved to the Grizzl-E Duo. That was definitely better with the dual cables and automatic power management between the EVs but it didn't have any smart features. If one EV needed a full 40amps, I could just leave the 2nd EV unplugged. Otherwise, it would share the load 20 amps each until the first one topped up, then it would switch to 32 amps for the EV still charging. Unfortunately, my Duo was an early one and had a few glitches. I ended up returning it after a few months of working with tech support to solve the issues. I expect the issues have been ironed out now since Grizzl-E Duo owners seem quite happy.
  • Now I use two separate L2 EVSEs. One 40 amp and one 16 amp. I have them set up so I can plug either EVSE into either EV, so the 40 amp (usually set to 32 amps) charges the lower one and the 16 amp tops up the higher one.
My favourite setup is the dual EVSEs. The 16-amp EVSE is fairly inexpensive to purchase and install since it only requires a 20-amp circuit, and it does 95% of the charging for my wife's daily driver. I rarely need to swap them unless she does a road trip.

This is what the couple that bought both my used Mach E‘s bought from Tesla. Has used it for over a year now and said totally works as advertised.

This is an awesome setup; however, it is missing some information. Not all jurisdictions allow the setup as described without additional equipment, so I encourage folks to verify their local rules first and get a cost for setting it up before jumping in.
Here in my jurisdiction, the EVSE must be the only appliance on the circuit. To set up two EVSEs for load sharing, you need a sub-panel with a full capacity circuit downstream for each EVSE, and a separate certified EV Energy Management System (EVEMS) to monitor the branch circuit feeding the sub-panel. Only then can you use the Tesla load-sharing functions. Two separate EVSEs cannot share the same circuit, relying solely on Tesla, ChargePoint or Wallbox WiFi-enabled load sharing. The EVEMS, of course, adds more complexity and cost to the installation.

To further add to my EV story...
Now my house is a 3 EV home. I have my 24 Lightning Flash, 24 Mach E Premium, and now my 19 year old daughter bought a 20 Hyundai Kona EV a few days ago. Still easily accommodating all three EVs with the one 40a charger!

AI is wrong, per usual.

You are not supposed to wire two on the same circuit with a single breaker. They both can be on the same branch circuit from the main panel, but each wall connector needs its own separate breaker so you would need a subpanel.

Ah didn’t realize the Universal Wall Connector has different internals. I’m only familiar with the Gen 3 version with a Tesla connector only, which did not support this type of install.

Still the AI is wrong because it says you can do it with gen 3 wall connector.
AI is crap.

Our electrician said there is now a charger that can charge 2 cars instead of one at a time. I have the MME and my husband has a Porsche Panamera that is plug in on one side and gas on the other. We don't really need another charger with 2. Our level 2 chargers has worked great for us the last 2 years. I don't drive long distances so I only need to charge once every week or two.

I can't speak to having more than one EV in my household, but I find driving an EV on long distance trips to be frustrating, mostly due to infrastructure problems/availability. It was more of a headache than it was worth driving 600 miles across states. It may have improved in the past couple years.

Electricity prices are also terrible from the monopolies in CA, so there was less financial incentive until recently.

Thank you, everyone, for your input.

We pulled the trigger on another EV a bit over two weeks ago and are now a 100% EV household.

No charger overlaps thus far, especially given how little my wife drives day-to-day.

I will still probably invest in the Grizz-E Duo or similar at some point, especially for the winter as the ol' MME will be sitting outside.

P.S. - The "new" EV is a 2025 Audi Q4 eTron, I'll post about it on another thread as it's VERY different from the MME. Different is not good/bad - just different.
