Yesterday's forum roundup included a post about the new heat pump where the acronym PTC was thrown out there and someone, or two (sometwo?) asked what it stood for which was answered a couple of times, fortunately.

Shortly after joining this forum I found myself puzzling over an acronym and asked (1) what it stood for, and (2) if there was an acronym list on this forum? Sadly the answer was 'no', but someone replied who had compiled their own list and forwarded a copy to me. I've referred to it often and even added one or two to the list. So I'm attaching a .pdf copy here hoping it can help out others who aren't particularly acronym savvy. For anyone using MS (MicroSoft) Word, I'm also attaching it in its original Word format. (See what I did there?)

Only an IDtenT would use an acronym without explaining it the first time in a report or post.

TBH it’s a bit of a PITA, TTFN everybody

😁

Agree. How many posts begin, "I tried searching for this issue but didn't/couldn't find...etc."
I’ve NEVER found any topic I searched for on here.

Put it down to an inadequacy of my own🤷🏼‍♂️

The search function on the forum is … less than ideal.
It is FUBAR.

No idea. I searched for that but it didn't show all of them...

Totally agree. Is it too much to ask to follow common rules of writing and spell it or define it first use in the post?
What "common rules of writing"? Please explain, in the first post you did where you used that term, because I'm a couch potato who can't type that into Google...

But I did, and it didn't tell me to always define it in the first post, sorry.

The number of people who don't know what an acronym means is a tiny fraction of the total, and Google works great. I'm always amazed on social media when someone types "what does DDD mean?" instead of typing that into Google and getting the answer immediately...

And most people can’t tell an acronym from an initialism. 😂

Yeah. Search is not this site's best feature but you can go to google.com and use the site:macheforum.com in your search and it will do a much better job.

Try:

Google "use of ackronims in literature"

I used to write operating procedures at a nuclear power plant. It was a hard rule that acronyms were defined first use. If I didn't, the procedure was not approved until I did.
