Does anyone turn off the car, i.e. push the start button, without returning the gear dial back to park? I suppose this is a general EV question. I have done this accudentally so I know this is possible for MME, but is it safe (for the driver and the car)? I don't think I will change my habit to do this since I still have an ICE car. Previously owning a Tesla has me completely dependent on walk away locking and a hard habit to break.

I do it. In fact, in my Escape PHEV I did it, in that one the dial even turned back to park automatically, my Mach E doesn't spin the dial magically though. It should be safe so long as you're stopped and not rolling.

I do it. I also do it on my Honda Pilot. Just stop, turn off the car, exit.

I do this, and did in my old Fusion Sport. Okay to to with the rotary gear shift on BEV, PHEV, and ICE.

That's my SOP.

I do it in my ICE Mustang and while the dial does rotate back to park, the parking break does not automatically set like it does in the Mach-E. That is the only difference.

All the time. My problem has been forgetting to turn the car off. I suspect that if you open the driver’s door, it at least reverts to “Park”. Been lucky so far…….

Totally fine.
It also puts itself in park when the car is running and you open the door. That feature can be annoying at times, when you need to move the car a bit with the door open. Every time the car comes to a stop, it goes into park again.

I believe I read in the manual that the MME is designed to put itself in park when you turn it off. I noticed that because I used to get mad at my husband for not putting our Prius in park before turning it off. ? He was right, I was wrong.

I guess I don't get this. Neither the "not turning it off", nor the "not putting it in Park". Then we're going to read "I was driving my spouse's gas car, and didn't put it into Park and drove through our garage..."

Muscle memory is hard to relearn. People have accidents driving gas vehicles and say "I am so used to 1 pedal driving"...

I had never thought about putting the car in park first before turning it off. When it is stopped, I just turn off power and walk away, then the car locks itself after your key is out of range.

My experience is transmission always reverts to Park when car is turned off.

However, it is possible for handbrake to remain off after turned car off which is handy after washing car or parking for a time because it stops brake pads sticking to the discs, or your US rotors.
