When I bought my car in Feb it was on 1.7.1 (ex Ford demonstrator - 8k miles MY21) I read around the forum and realised it was way behind - so I complained to the salesman and he said bring it in and we will update it. I booked it in and drove up (45min drive) and the service guy said - I don't know why your car is booked in because I've looked on the computer and there are no recalls or outstanding issues - and no pending updates - I had to kick up quite a fuss because I'd driven 45 mins to get there eventually it boiled down to the fact they wanted to charge for it and I felt I didn't want to pay .... But the guy relented and said they would do it and charge the used sales team. Got the car back at the end of the day and it was at 2.2 Something and then in recent weeks OTAs have been popping through steadily and is now at 4.2.1.2 - I think as with most of these car companies the big issue is that doing updates ties up a diagnostic machine for several hours - as long as your car drives ok they don't give a crap what version you're on. To be honest 99% of the updates do nothing the only really good one so far was the one that gets Android Auto to use more of the screen.
However .... It's still a magical feeling when you get in your car in the morning and you see the update symbol saying that some software update has happened - there's always a thought in the back of your mind that it might be some mystical under the hood improvent
