Uncontrolled/Unintended Acceleration on 2023 MME while using single pedal drive **SAFETY ISSUE**

Scary as a heart attack. Pretty much identical problem with a 2023 Mustang mach e premium for my friend but slightly different. He said that things were getting wonky (radio was going off and on?) and he decided to drive it into a parking lot to park to see what was what. As he pulled into a space it accelerated suddenly and hit a building. He knows that everyone will say it is his fault and that it would require a death or a paralysis to get someone to tear the car apart. He is just moving on to a different vehicle and chocking it up to lesson learned but someone may get hurt.

Yeah, unfortunately for the OP these things are pretty common and so far every single one was one of two things-

1. they accidentally hit the accelerator
2. They accidentally hit the resume button on cruise control

It’s not a coincidence that these same exact scenarios always happen when pulling into or out of a parking space.

It’s called an “accident” for a reason. Zero chance the OP is going to find some proof otherwise. Even if they had a dash cam and videos of their feet, all you would see is them accidentally hitting the gas when they thought they were on the brake.

It sucks, but these parking lot gas vs brake things are very common with all cars. I’m kinda surprised with 1PD it doesn’t happen more often since you train yourself not to move your right foot.

Agree - very common to confuse the brake vs accelerator pedals in an abrupt decision.

I have seen many people locally drive their cars into businesses and homes by "accident" during a parking maneuver.

As for 1PD, like @RickMachE, I don't use it - no matter what the dealer may have told the OP.

Where I drive, 1PD does not work well enough to prevent a collision (urban Los Angeles bumper to bumper traffic) - constantly need to jump on the brakes so it's 2PD....

Also, 1PD interferes with my muscle memory as I also drive white fleet government work vehicles (2PD and 3PD) and if I get into an accident, the state police gets involved automatically, get a DUI field test, blood draw at the doctor's office, and a ton of "paperwork" to fill out.

A Steep Mountain Drive, a Brake Failure and a Volvo Recall

Article published in the Wall Street Journal. A software update for the rearview camera in an Electric Volvo XC-90 interfered with the function of the brakes resulting in a crash. Not unreasonable to consider that any of these updates for electric vehicles can alter functions in seemingly unrelated systems.

This happened to me three times. They were scary enough that they are burned in my memory.
I use 1 pedal drive exclusively since 2021. First time in car line. Inching forward. Slightly hit pedal to accelerate car stopped on its own as expected. Then a half second later sounded like I floored it. Started to speed into the car in line in front of me. I slammed on breaks. Crisis averted. Now that first time, no idea if it was me or the car. But now I was paying more attention to watch out for this. Second time, at a football game in a parking lot. I slid over to another car line to merge with traffic. I tapped accelerator car stopped on its own as expected . Vrroooooom almost rammed the car. I know I didnt do it that time. Didnt hit any buttons, didnt put my foot to the floor. I was in one pedal with no feet touching anything and the car felt like it was about to accelerate to 80. No cruise control was set. Last time I again was in a publix parking lot. Stopped at a stop sign. Rolled to stop using regen. Half second later it was like I had both feet on pedals. Nobody was there so I let it do its thing. I would have been doing 90 and I never go that fast even on cruise control. Now I make sure to tap the break every time I stop to engange auto hold. Ultimately its on me to stop the car. But to say everyone is just hitting wrong buttons is total bullshit. The car does incorrectly accelerate to high speeds under very similar conditions. Again learn your car and stop it. But this should be investigated.

If I had issues like that, I would have switched to two pedal drive. Safety is more important than using one pedal drive. I used one pedal drive initially but I have a two pedal truck and a three pedal truck along with a two pedal work car so I switched to two pedal drive to be consistent with the other vehicles that I drive.

I have had this problem before when backing out of my driveway and when I turn left it accelerated.
Someone on the forum said I could have hit the button that engages the speed control. I make sure now that my hands don't go near that button and I have never had that issue again.
That could be your problem.

It’s not a coincidence. You hit the resume button just like everyone else.

I won't comment on what may have happened with other folks. I just turn off adaptive cruise control whenever I am not actively using it. I NEVER have it on in town, let alone a parking lot.

I never use it outside of the highway. This conversation is pointless. The spirt of this site is to keep info flowing about potential issues we might be experiencing to help each other out. Some people like to shill for Ford or naysay people. Like you and the 15 other “your hitting a button on the steering wheel and you must have blacked out when you drive in a parking lot” Thats not the point here. Its like this site isnt full of threads with people saying “hey this happened to me too” its solved a lot of problems for me since 2021. So screw you if you think I hit a button.

Yes this has happened to a lot of people. They were all turning the steering wheel with objects in front of them. The exact set of events that will make the car accelerate if you accidentally hit the resume button.

We can’t solve it, nor can your dealer.

You can disable cruise control in settings or not hit the button.

Ford could make it harder for this to happen by creating a restriction in the program where the resume button only works when the steering wheel is straight as I’ve suggested a few times in the thread. Only way that’ll happen is if many people submit the same issue directly to Ford to solve or an accident with injuries forces the issue unfortunately.
