We are moving to California from the east coast for work. We will road-trip the MME out, but driving our 2019 e-Golf across the country sounds terrible. We can certainly pay to ship it out ($1000), it’s going to need new tires ($1000), and be a 5 year old car pretty soon - And the local dealer badly wants to buy it from me.

we love the MME CA rt1- it’s our primary road travel car, and the e-Golf has been our city car. It’s not that fast but 0-40 is fun and the range isn’t an issue. I was hoping the Fisker Pear or some other new hatchback would come out on timeline.

1) buy a used e-golf in CA
2) buy a new premium Bolt EUV and take the tax credit
3) buy a new premium rwd standard range MME, take the incentives and the tax credit
4) something else

Would appreciate any insights from people who have driven Bolts and the MME, not particularly interested in Tesla, although if they keep slashing prices maybe.

I test drove the Bolt EUV Premier, it’s decent, I liked the digital mirror, but the power delivery was a non-starter for me. I would get another MME, maybe the Select RWD if it was a good deal, and if you cared about the 35-40 miles of range difference. I don’t know how much the Premium gives you at standard range.

If you want something small like the Bolt, I have been drooling over the Volvo EX30, which comes out next summer. The RWD base model is only $35,000, but upgrading to the AWD will give it a lot more oomph, if you like speed. I would not be surprised if they have the lease deal for federal tax credit, if that loophole still exists. If you need something now, though, I liked driving the MME better than the Bolt, but the Bolt would be easier to fit in parking spots.

If the golf is not having issues I would ship it to CA and put a new set of tires on it. Probably going to be a bunch of expenses you didn't plan on living in a new city.

Plus that way you can assess if your needs have changed, maybe you will need something with a longer range maybe not

Its primary is going to be my wife’s daily driver so have to see if she cares much about the lack of power.

The EX30 is intriguing but the timing won’t work. Will need something in January.

As to your other point about unknown expenses. We’re used to it. Move quite a bit. Our latest thought might be to lease the IONIQ 5 for 2 years. We may be moving overseas then and in 2 years I anticipate a lot of different EV options which also feeds my thought that in 2 years my e-Golf will be worth nothing.

January will be the start of the tax credit as down payment so you have that going for you . Research if you haven't already what credits California gives and for what and maybe let that be the deciding factor

For just around town use my wife almost preferred the Bolt over the MachE. It was smaller so quicker to park, she also never stressed about denting, dinging a door, rubbing a curb, and she personally does not love all the attention and looks the MachE gets. It was worse last year, but still. At the school pickup line 3rd grade boys would be asking questions and waving at the car. The Bolt never drew attention.
