Ford Mustang Mach-E Installing Comma.ai / OpenPilot (BlueCruise alternative) Comma.ai-3X-front-shop-1680x1260

As of 0.9.2, Comma.ai began to support Ford vehicles. Their latest release, 0.9.4, is quite impressive.

Went ahead and put in an order for the Comma C3X and the needed Ford Q4 Harness .

Since our IPMA is located in the trunk area, a long 3.1 USB-C extension is required. I picked out this one, as it seems to meet all the specs.

I will be documenting and taking photographs to the best of my ability so that people can hopefully learn and not repeat any mistakes that I make.

Following this...

I had a Prius Prime with C.Ai before I went full EV.

I loved the software, the company... not so much. I had an early edition and it constantly ran the fan because of some faulty temp sensor. Comma.Ais customer service was the WORST! They said they couldn't repeat the issue, said they replaced a fan and mailed it back to me. Worked for literally 1 day, then went back to "constant on". They also mailed it back in a crushed box and with no protection around the device. It didn't break, but I sent it to them with all the protections it came to me with (wrapped in foam, plastic, in the cardboard case protected).

That said, the software was amazing. An absolute dream to drive with.

I have a Tesla now and much prefer the C.Ai for long trips. Literally 0 nags for hours of driving in highways. Teslas SW is better on backroads, but man that C.Ai is a dream come true in the highways

I saw your response this AM on the discord. Good luck with your install; excited to see the c3x with the red panda built In. I think you’re in San Diego, so you probably getting your item early this week.

While not impossible, it was challenging fitting all the for our Ioniq 5 set up.

I think it's best to describe the Mach E/Lightning/F150 as "open beta". They are not listed on the supported list because it's not fully cooked. But if you hook it up, it will provide some functionality.

@RyanSD is this comparable with the Mach-E? Their website does not list the Mach-E as a compatible vehicle.
As you see on their website, our MME is not on the compatibility list as there is still code to be tested and upstreamed to the master branch.

That being said, there are experimental branches that people have been working on for some time that are working. Definitely more comparable to an "open beta".

I have a background in data center and network design and am comfortable working at the command line. While I'm not a software designer / engineer, in any way, I feel confident in my skills getting everything installed and working. The discord community is active with a lot of really amazing people all with the goal of getting OpenPilot into the hands, safely, of the masses.

I had open pilot on my previous vehicle before owning the Mach-E and I must say it was used much more than I use Blue Cruise currently. It's very useful on highways, and even some backroads, and won't randomly disengage as frequently as blue cruise does. I hope this gets working asap. This would be a game changer for me because ford is absolutely nuts for thinking they can get away with $800 a year for Blue Cruise.

Yup, located in the San Diego area. You installed the light-up rear pony for me, I believe.

Since Comma.ai's HQ is located near me in downtown San Diego, in the Little Italy area, I'm not concerned about receiving quality hardware support.

I've purchased a good set of pry tools and I'll take my time on the install as to not damage the car. I'm a little concerned about the space available, in the housing where the front camera is, but I'm sure it will be fine.

I have used open source software for UAVs for years... It never occurred to me that open source ADAS was available for any car. I look forward to following this.

Is there support for pass through, so that switching between BC/CoPilot and OpenPilot can be done without having to unplug cables?

I have been following this project since before I even picked up a Mach-E. Are you able to speak to the limitations between OpenPilot on a Mach-E vs OpenPilot on say a Kia EV6?

How is this going??

I just saw a video of the release of a new version of OpenPilot and I am seriourly interested to see how this is working for you. It feels it can be much better than BlueCruise and cheaper in the long term.

I second this. I see this as a more viable option especially when they start charging for BC. I'm not confident I could set this up and test it before the 30 day money back guarantee deadline is up.

"open beta" sounds like something a cardiologist would say when they sit the triple bypass out and delegate to a first year med student. No, thank you.
