Video was a little disappointing. Only news is:

1. No determination on whether vehicles will have both ports or just switch to only the Tesla plug.
2. Adapters will be available in early 2024.
3. Tesla will be supplying the adapters.
4. Ford is aware of the charge port location challenges and is looking at solutions

I have more questions than answers after watching that video, only because I didn't have some of the questions Tom asked until he asked them, I don't believe Jeff answered one question. Wonder if he has thought of running for office, he's a natural ?

not much meat on that bone. the "free-adapters for everyone" crowd will be sad. i guess i'll have something to spend my fordpass rewards points on afterall.

my main take-away is that there doesn't seem to be much in the way of an actual business agreement between tesla and ford. everything from plug&charge to longer cables are "well, we're talking..." status.

not impressed.

really wish tom would have pressed mr. beno on what they are doing to get EA and other partners in their blue oval network to improve their service.

Wow, that was a very reticent interview. Like usual, Tom did a great job asking highly relevant questions and being a good host, but Ford's representative was extremely tight lipped and answered with canned statements.

I was quite surprised he couldn't even give a respectable answer to "will there be one or two DC ports?"

At least he settled that we will have to pay for and order a NACS adapter and Tesla will make them. That's exactly what I predicted when the announcement was first made.

I'm also shocked he really doubled down on requiring dealers to install CCS chargers when they will be obsolete in 2-3 years. If I was a dealer that had to spend $250k on something that will have to get ripped out and replaced in only 2-3 years I'd be furious. That seems like a total lack of forward thinking.

Tom also pointed out Plug & Charge still doesn't allow Pass+ rates on EA, which has been an ongoing problem for the past 1.5 years.

Ford would be wise to listen to Tom and do what he suggests. If Tom is happy, your customers will be happy.

I got a different list of important points among the waffling:

  1. Existing Ford owners will have to purchase the adapters.
    1. They will be sold through Ford Accessories | The Official Site for Ford Accessories
    2. Price is still unknown
  2. Model E dealers are still working to place CCS chargers in the ground as fast as possible
  3. Plug configurations in future vehicles is still unknown and may vary among models
  4. Ford is committed to bi-directional charging
  5. Ford is committed to Plug & Charge and will work to make it compatible with Tesla Superchargers

I guess it’s great that Ford agreed to the interview, but like most said above it was a bit of a nothing burger. Although I was a bit surprised to hear Ford did not pay Tesla anything for access to the network.

Still, happy its happening. I’m in a rural seaside town on the east coast of Quebec right now and noticed 8 new Superchargers have gone in just 30km away. Maybe next year I can ditch the ICE and take the Mach-E on the 1600 km trek.

I'm sure Tesla reserves the right to charge whatever the hell they want to us off-brand users. Hopefully Ford negotiated some kind of pricing agreement to keep things reasonable in case Musk has a sudden change of heart, but maybe not.

I also wanted to mention, since the adapters will be sold on Ford Accessories, that probably means we can use our FordPass Rewards points towards them. So save up your points.

Wasn't surprised at the canned responses, since it sounds like the announcement was pushed to get out fast where the details to be worked out later. I am sure there are a lot of things in the works.

Hardware on the vehicle wise, I am not surprised they wouldn't confirm since that area of the business is very secretive.

Based on 46 thousand miles in my Mach E thru oh, about 30+ states, I actually now prefer the "CCS + Tesla adapter" solution. Even if the Tesla DCFC adapter costs a bit.

It's kind of like being a member of two large HMOs rather than just one. The choice of using either system, as the circumstances apply, seems good.

So those of us in AZ, OK, VT will not be able to get them?
You will likely be able to buy through your local Ford dealer as well, also using your FordPass points. ??

Tesla sells a CCS to NACS, so even if future models do drop CCS, there is an option to charge from NACS and CCS. $175.

Also he does state Ford plans to make the adaptor "affordable"...what that means I dont know but here's hoping it's $200 and not $500.

I wish there was talk about how the actual supercharging will work. Maybe it'll just be the same as Tesla's implantation with non-Tesla vehicles in their app. You pull up, select the station in the app, and plug in with your adaptor.

The CCS/Tesla adapter started at $250 and is now down to $175, so I hope ours is in a similar price range. Around $200 is reasonable.
