iOS 17 adds real-time charging availability info

With iOS 17 this year, Apple is further expanding on its set of features in Apple Maps for electric car owners. Starting this year, Apple Maps will show real-time charging availability information and let drivers choose a preferred charging network.

That's fantastic and Apple has been so smart to get into this area as quickly as possible. We used Apple Maps on our first long road trip in the MME a couple months ago and it was great to use a map system we already know and see our projected charge at arrival as we went. The integration is already great, will be nice to see it go even further.

Only issue I had with it was on the drive home, it absolutely wanted us to stop to charge like 10 miles from home because I guess it thought we would run out, or maybe fall under 10% when we were that close to home? I had to cancel and redo the route once we got closer to home before it finally realized that wasn't needed. Hopefully they improve the ability to skip a recommended stop or set your "comfort level" for state of charge at arrival. We got home with about 17% battery remaining, the extra charging stop was totally not needed.

Does Apple Maps EV integration still not show "remaining miles" on a trip? I use Apple Maps all the time (my preferred app for routing) but I had to turn off the EV integration. I like seeing the miles remaining in a trip.

I installed the beta. Here’s what it looks like… It says there were 17 chargers (seems like a lot?). So that top “Chargers” number must be the number available.

Scratch that. I looked up ChargePoints and it has a different UI. Maybe EA isn’t fully integrated yet.

Unfortunately no. It only shows time of arrival and SOC at arrival. I wish it still showed time to destination.

Really wish they fixed the CarPlay scaling on larger screens like ours. Things are still super small on the multiapp home page thing. Drives me nuts!

Totally agree, the multi-app format is terrible. Do we know for sure that it's not improved in iOS 17?

Now can it tie in helpful information? Like reliability. For example, if a specific charger sees 8-10 charges on average per day and doesn't see any for several days mark it as unknown.

Yeah I was hoping to see some big CarPlay improvements and there was basically none.

They mentioned CarPlay in the keynote, but only talked about the addition of SharePlay. No mention of anything else.

I have iOS 17 and CarPlay is essentially the same, aside from this addition to preferred charges for Maps (I have not tried SharePlay, which is the only feature really mentioned for CarPlay).
