This past weekend my wife and I took her 2025 MME for a trip to Vermont. We pulled into Twin State Ford in St Johnsbury to utilize there DCFC. We plugged in and waited for the charging to start for 5 min, nothing. After reading the instructions on the charger it noted that we need to open Ford Pass and choose the place, charging station name, and side number on the charger, after doing this charging started. We did the same thing on the way home at Grappone Ford in Concord NH, had to go through the same thing, no plug and charge.

Shouldn’t the chargers at a Ford dealer be Plug and Charge Compatible? I know don't assum anything!

What happened to “Plug and Charge”?

Plug and charge was/is setup in Ford pass with a CC, is there a setting in the car that needs to be set? My wife told me that the salesperson walked her through setting up Plug and Charge, but you know how that goes.

I have used plug and charge on my 2023 MME with no issues.

Any suggestions on what to check to make sure its set up correctly?

Plug & Charge and BlueOval Charge Network are not the same thing, but Plug & Charge is part of BlueOval Charge Network.

BlueOval Charge Network gives you access to 21 different networks at all 21 you can use the FordPass app to activate and pay for charging without downloading any additional apps or making any additional accounts.

Plug & Charge is a feature of BlueOval Charge Network at networks which support it - currently Electrify America, EVolve NY, and Tesla Superchargers.

The full list of where you can use your BlueOval Charge Network account to activate:

  • BC Hydro
  • Blink
  • bp pulse
  • ChargePoint
  • ChargeSmart EV
  • Circuit Électrique
  • Electrify America (supports Plug & Charge)
  • EV Connect
  • EVgo
  • EVolve NY (supports Plug & Charge)
  • FLO
  • Ford Charge
  • FPL EVolution
  • Francis Energy
  • InCharge
  • IONNA
  • Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging
  • Pilot Flying J
  • Red E
  • Shell Recharge
  • Tesla Superchargers (supports Plug & Charge)

I posted rec3ntly about a similar experience with a Ford dealership in Richmond VA. I didn't see any info about using FordPass so I used a credit card. It strikescme as odd that Ford wouldn't make dealership chargers part of P&C but that's bizniss in these United States. Probably something to do with franchises & freedom...

The chargers at the Ford dealership in Brunswick, Ohio used to be plug and charge. On the latest attempt, the charger stated "no longer part of Ford network" (at a Ford dealer?) Location did not show up on Ford phone app or on car's screen. The credit card readers didn't work either, so used the Hyundia dealer down the street. They have since fixed those glitches, but still not plug and charge.

As posted above, only certain networks support plug and charge. Annoyingly, Ford dealers are not one of them. And not all Ford dealers may be using the same network for chargers either.

Would love to dig deeper - what dealer and location? No dealer charger should have ever been Plug & Charge, though they may have been free vend at one point.

The best part of BlueOval Charge Network is just how universal it is - so I always start with FordPass when paying for charging - at the majority of chargers in the US it's that simple.

Except that it's not really that simple for everyone everywhere.

Plug and Charge couldn't be more simple - works at EA and Tesla ONLY. Period.

The reason that Ford dealers aren't plug and charge compatible is because a) they're all not using the same chargers or charging network, b) the charging network needs to pass data to/from Ford, and only Tesla and EA do that.

One of the realities of EVs is that many of the concepts, like "Tesla only locations" seem to be a challenge for many people. Ford put a big blue card in the package, and it seems like 75% of the people never read it.

But, it's not just Ford. GM, KIA, etc. all do the same thing - pull into Tesla and wonder why it doesn't work. "I've been to 3 locations"...

Ford P&C only works with Electrify America and Tesla stations.
"Works" here being an advertised functionality and not an actual guarantee that it will work. I've had enough P&C failures at Superchargers that I set up a Tesla account and activate it from the Tesla app to save time and frustration.

Have never tried EA

P&C may be simple as far as it goes, but the frustration that seems to be surfacing in some comments (including my own) is how far it doesn't go. My travels do not include very many trips requiring public charging. Frustration arises when familiar chargers are out of commission or other factors cause me to have to hunt down a charger in the wild and in the moment. I've been carrying the Tesla adapter in my trunk in the box it came in (no doubt with the blue card inside...🤣) for almost a year as "backup" but haven't yet had the patience or stress- free time to try it out & get comfortable with it. Figuring out new things is fun, but also sometimes frustrating. Comparing experiences here & complaining, on the other hand, is always just fun!

For those that may not be aware of this, you can set up Plug and Charge at EVGO. They call it Autocharge+ and you first need to have an EVGO account. Instructions are in the EVGO app

The only time I’ve had P&C fail is after a FordPass update switched off the setting unbeknownst to me.
