Pretty recent article, but I wonder if this is still true with gas now approaching $5 / gallon in some places. I would think a pandemic like supply/demand would increase value at some point.

“Many people assumed the recent spike in gas prices would mean a resurgence in EV demand, but hybrids have proven to be the real benefactor of rising fuel costs,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “Hybrids are selling faster, retaining more value, and growing their market share faster than electric vehicles, though Tesla’s EVs are also doing quite well.”

Here's the original article with a bit less sensationalizing: https://www.iseecars.com/used-car-market-study

Their methodology seems busted to me. "iSeeCars analyzed over 6.7 million 1- to 5-year-old used cars sold in January-March 2025 and January-March 2026 across three separate analyses. [...] the average listing prices of each car model were compared between the two time periods"

As far as I know, there were no 5 year-old Mach Es in January-March 2025. So their 2025 reference cohort is most likely on average younger than their 2026 cohort. It's not a very clean comparison.

Also, didn't Ford drop the price of the Mach E over the years?

I paid too much for my car when you compare to what it would cost to buy today. That means there is a larger market adjustment between the MSRP and current value. A lot of BEVs suffer from the same issue too due that wave of ridiculous ADM we went through a few years ago. Value seems to have stabilized some (I track it monthly because I maintain a personal balance sheet). My Mach-E is a tool and a depreciating asset, not an investment.

I only track its value because it is not worth $0.00 and there is a corresponding liability on my balance sheet (my auto loan). I plan on keeping the vehicle until it is no longer usable so being under water on it, though certainly not ideal, does not affect me materially.

How much have these things dropped in value lol? I’m starting to wonder if I should try finding a 22 for my son. Pretty big risk buying an early build Mach E out of warranty, though.

My recent purchase of a '23 MME from Carvana seems to contradict this article.

We started looking before the gas price spike. MMEs on Carvana were plentiful and in the low/mid $20k - low $30k depending on trim/battery/mileage, etc...

After gas spiked, a lot of the MMEs would go "on hold" or "under contract". The MMEs that then came on Carvana started to creep up on price, and basically the only colors that seemed to be available were black or white, any other color got snatched up quickly showing "under contract".

By the time we (my wife) decided to pull the trigger, our ICE trade had dropped about $1000 and the '23 MME Premium was up at least $1500 from when I first started looking the week before the gas price increase. The purchase was finalized about 3 weeks after the gas price increase. A quick look at Carvana now shows this trend continuing.

I looked at used ones in my area of So Cal and found them too hight priced or to many miles. Bought new 2025 with warranty and 9% financing. Yes I paid more than used but got a new vehicle and not white, black or gray. Oh and no glass roof as I live in the desert.

💯- it’s only depreciated if you want or need to sell it. I’m sitting on a couch right now that’s also depreciating, but I don’t care. The dog likes it, it’s been through two toddlers and now teenagers who don’t understand where to eat pizza. So it’s worth exactly nothing as an asset. It’s well worth what I paid for it, however, because I need a place to park my bottom.

Ford re-priced the Mach-E in February 2024 including all cars in dealer inventory, reducing the MSRP by $8-12K depending on trim.
That is the month I bought my 2023, which was 9 months old by then. Like Gus-E, I'm upside-down on the loan (0% interest) but I don't care either. I'm glad EVs are regaining some lost ground.
