Normally use Vector, MyCanic, or Puma OBDII tools. Those red boxes are prolly one of those.
I didn't want to disturb them to ask details. Besides, I have no idea what any of those do anyway. It's an impressive amount of hardware needed to install a little bit of code. Whatever they needed, I'm glad they were able to do it!

I added a duct tape tag to the loop to lengthen the pull.

Are you having to use this often? Have you tried the suggestion I've posted a few times on here when its stuck?

Those are Fords own scan tools for communicating with and diagnosing the onboard computers and sensors. Both are designed and manufactured by Bosh. The one above the driver display is the VCM II which connects to the ODB2 port and can be used with Fords diagnostics software and 3rd party diagnostics software like ForScan. The one in front of the passenger is the new VCMM tool. It not only connects to the OBD2 port but has other ports for connecting diagnostics probes, sensors, and tools. It's geared towards newer models and is more capable of diagnosing issues with high voltage electrical systems and motors.

They had the same box for me, I was able to watch over the shoulder of the FE but it looked really Greek to me and I’m an IT guy. The token install looked really complicated and when it was done the MME tossed a ton of errors that the FE had to get help on clearing. They said the token is good for 30 days but if a reset is done it removes it. I’m told they are working on a USB version that’s much simpler to install but it’s not ready.

What were the software updates?

Sorry, misspoke when I typed that. It turned out all they had updated was the enhanced diagnostics. Like yours, it threw a lot of errors. Ford Engineering on the phone directed the FSE what to do to clear them, with the last error being cleared by driving around the block! Worked fine coming home. We drive across to the east coast and back tomorrow. ?

Ah ok, after they cleared mine I didn’t have any issues. I did learn that with one of the faults the shifter knob can lock into place.

That's one of the "stop ship" home chargers. How did it work? I plug in for the first time tomorrow and I haven't heard anything since the first problems were reported.

It charged. That's all I know.

You may recall that when they installed the 21B02 software patch on Marlin they installed an enhanced diagnostics package with an ability for me to record an audio file to report issues when needed. When I had some of the issues with chargers and PaaK in the last week I tried to make reports but it didn’t work. It turns out when they did a master test as part of recalibrating the new PDU, it seems to have killed the token that made this system work.

Today I’m visiting Tamiami Ford in Naples where they were reinstalling that token and subsequent diagnostics. It’s quite the operation, involving lots of computer and electronic diagnostic equipment, service foreman Jodie, FSE Jamie, working on the phone with Ford Engineering. Since it didn’t require being in a regular bay, they did it at the L2 charger and I was able to peek in on the operation.

wow - nice to see ford dealers in a different state step in help and nice to have Ford continue to monitor Marlin

Thankfully I've only had to use this once in the Shark Valley incident described in an earlier post on this thread.

While not artistic, this is a shot of Marlin parked in front of the first house we ever owned -- a little 2/1 bungalow in Hollywood, FL. That big tree in the front yard? It's a sapodilla we planted when it was 2-3' tall. The tree you see in back is an Avocado we grew from a pit of an avocado harvested from a neighbor's tree. When we bought this house in the 1980s, the tallest things on the lot were
  • house
  • clothesline
  • rainbird sprinkers
  • grass

We made a few changes!
