As far as I understood you can put the "direction-shifter" into N and then press the "L" button. That would give you a 30 minute "Temperary Neutral mode", which could be used for a car wash.
Not too complicated...
I just don’t feel comfortable having someone else follow those instructions to put the car in true neutral. I had valets refuse to take the car because of the passcode. It’s simple enough to you and I but for some people it will be uncomfortable for them or they won’t pay attention to your instructions.

Maybe it’s my paranoia but having a “Wash Car” button would be simple for sure.

I’m sure it’s a matter time before BEVs are convertibles. Once battery tech and motors get more range and efficiency, then they will have larger buffers so that range with the top down doesn’t strand you.
I don't think it has to do with range, it's more form factor. Convertibles are much easier to build on 2 door coupes with smaller backseats, but the market for that kind of car is too small to justify the effort right now. Everybody wants 4 door SUVs, so that is where the R&D is concentrated to get the best ROI. Once the platform and software are worked out and the 4 door BEV market gets saturated we'll see a convertible BEV coupe. Unfortunately that probably won't happen until 2030, which is a bummer for me (I'm 55 now).

Wondering about how you found hotels with chargers. Did you have to call each one to check? Is there an online resource? Can you "reserve" a charger? Thanks. Great write up!

hotels.com has an "electric vehicle charging point" search filter for this. You could also check plugshare.com.

I called the hotel I was interested in to verify that the charging was "universal" and not just for Teslas. (I don't have an adapter.) They said it was for all EVs...

Then I showed up and it looked like it was only for Tesla, since it was obviously the Tesla wall mount charging option (on pedestals in the parking lot). I was about to be pretty upset... But I got out and took a closer look at it and noticed that on each pedestal, they had a Tesla charger facing the parking space and a Clipper Creek J1772 charger facing towards the building. So all was good. :)

WoW! Tesla-jerks must be really scared about this ride …

I'm expecting some initial problems with this car, but as long as the manufacturer wants feedback, I'm happy with that instead of «Everything is according to our standards» as Tesla says.

ah! Gotcha. I was thinking of the aerodynamics of the car.

I called. The only hotels were the ones down the 5 for me. I choose to stick with a specific chain for comfort and convince rather then who had chargers. Calling around is the only way I know. PlugShare may be good resource But I don’t think you can filter on hotels. Would be a nice addition. Of the hotels that had chargers it was first come first serve and they were not DCFC.

Great write up.

Are you saying that at 80/85mph, the range is somewhere around 160 to 175 miles from 100% based on 1.8-2 miles per kW?

Gotta say, thats pretty shitty based on a car advertised as 330 mile range over here in then UK.

What is the improvement at 70mph (Our motorway speed limit)?

Thanks

At 70-75mph in decent weather, you'll get about 250 miles (which is actually the EPA highway rating). So on the Mach-E4x that the poster presumably has, that's about 2.8 mi/kWhr. Which is about what I've experienced myself. If the temps were below about 50°F, you'd probably want to reduce your expectations even more.

I didn't do the range calculations, in hindsight maybe I should have, but I did see that my m\kwh was low. I tried to keep the car 75 or below on highways where possible. Only on the 80 stretches did I do 80-85. As I have no hard data I will say that I felt more comfortable going 70-75 than 80-85 as, to me, it did not seem to hurt the range very much. I think I was 2.5-2.8 on the slower runs. TBH this driving was on my way home and I wanted to get there asap so I wasn't too observant.

Next stop was the hotel which I made it with about 40% battery. Stopped at a near by EA DCFC to get to 80% then back to the hotel where they had a destination charger. Was able to leave the car plugged in for free overnight and started the next day with 100%.
Awesome summary - thanks for that! Quick question on the DCFC charge-up prior to your hotel stay. Did you do that in case there were no available charging spots at the hotel? In my experience, I can get 6-7 kW from a typical hotel Level 2 charger, which gives me at least 50-60 kWh of 'free' charge overnight (8-10 hours plugged in). Because of this, I only need to show up at the hotel with ~20%-30% SOC, and I usually end up with 95%-100% the next morning.

FYI, Hilton has a pretty good EV charger policy, and their website includes a list of properties with EV chargers. I recently attended a conference where I didn't stay at the conference hotel (not a Hilton) because they didn't have a destination charger. I told the hotel management that I was staying offsite because of that; hopefully they'll get their act together :)

I took a 1,000+ mile road trip a month ago and averaged 2.7 mi/kWh while traveling in a 70 mph zone, averaging around 75-77 mph.

Tom did a 70 mph range test on the Jersey Turnpike in good weather....managed 286 miles.

Alex managed 244 miles with 14% battery left after driving 5 mph over speed limit. 244/.86=284 miles of range.

Earlier Alex managed 268 mph vs 234 for MY on a real world test some highway and some local...chilly day.
