charging in the rain, ok?

I had a c max energi since 2013 and now the mach e since Feb......I have never charged in the rain, but is it ok and safe?.....I did a brief search and didn't find anything.....it has been raining here in NJ for a few days......sometimes I drape an old poncho over the charge port for some protection.....opinions appreciated

I do it all the time, everything will be fine, there are no issues with charging in the rain.

Our first charge at the Ford dealer was done in very heavy rain for several hours! We left after they got it up over 90%.

Take a look at that plug (on the EVSE/charger side). Its pretty long and has some good gaskets on it. You'll have no problems (as stated above).

Even in rain followed by below freezing conditions turning the car into a big chunk of ice:

(Yeah this was my Bolt--don't have a pic like this of the Mach-E because it lives in the garage and it hasn't experienced weather like this yet.)

Ford must have expected some would need to plug in due to environmental conditions and not all have a garage. I think these vehicle are intended to be docked. I would think about unplug it during an electrical storm if I was around but it has to be able to take a bit of snow and rain. My definition of severe may be different than others? I will not have it plugged into Ford's mobile charger but a grizzle extreme.

I could be wrong here, but I believe the reason they warn against using the “Ford Mobile Charger” in heavy rain or snow is that when they made the decision to make the plug swapable, that created a potential way for water to get inside the charger and to a point where it could contact live electricity. It’s not likely to happen, but it could.

"swappable" is? It says the charger not the vehicle and therefore you would think it has something to do with the charger itself. Still anyone that had their home hit with lighting knows it may be a good idea to unplug all the high end electronics. May be covered but who needs the hassle.

Had my boat get hit at the dock. Vaporized my antenna off the top of the mast, burnt holes in my Bimini, fried every electrical component on the boat. Even blew apart the the pickup inside the distributor on the motor. LED Bulbs blown out of their sockets found on the other side of the cabin. Just happy I or my family was not aboard at the time.

We got hit the first year we bought (once in 22 years). Sparks jumping out of the kitchen ceiling light, dishwasher caught on fire, microwave, printer on and on. A sparked jumped from a beer cap to my sister as she was grabbing a beer from the basement beer frig. I thought that maybe a sign but nope she actually started to drink a bit more after that ?

This is good stuff to know because I'm one of the ones without a garage. I'll probably be using a 120v at first, need to do a 220v at some point when I get the car but it'll all still be outside which means the mobile charger will be in the weather regardless. I was thinking of getting something mainly to cover the plug and mobile charger over night in case it rains.

If the charger is mounted outside, I would advise getting a third party charger that is properly weather sealed instead of mounting the mobile charger outside. I haven't seen anywhere that Ford rates it for waterproofing/resistance, and although the dongle fits tightly I would worry about that.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I was hoping to not have to pay for a new outlet and charger on day 1 but I may have to.

I staggered and got the outlet and used the ford mobile 240V for a bit. But the mobile charger is a light frunk style of charger. That was noticeable just comparing the cable diameter with the wall mount plugin I got.

Not gonna lie that's actually a nice setup, I forgot about outdoor electrical boxes like that. Way more simple than I was thinking too. If the electrical box wasn't on the other side of the house I'd probably just run the wire by myself, but at this point it would be a lot of work to get it where it needs to be so I'd hire someone.
